On behalf of the journal Antibiotics, it is my great pleasure to welcome you to this webinar focused on respiratory tract infections.
Respiratory infections represent one of the most frequent clinical scenarios where antibiotics are either over prescribed, under dosed, or given for inappropriate durations. Additionally, in different settings, second-line or reserve antimicrobials are used, and the treatments are not switched to a better option when the microbiological evidence is available. Differentiating viral from bacterial aetiologies is the cornerstone of good antimicrobial stewardship: viral disease does not require antibiotic therapy, yet secondary bacterial complications frequently demand well timed and optimised antibiotic treatment.
In this session, our international panel of experts will cover community and hospital acquired respiratory conditions, including challenges in ICU settings. We will explore how to distinguish viral and bacterial causes and discuss practical strategies to define optimal antibiotic treatment duration for bacterial pneumonia and severe lower respiratory tract infections.
We encourage you to submit your questions during the presentations, which will be addressed in our collective Q&A segment at the end. We hope this webinar will offer actionable clinical take aways for all participants. Enjoy the session.
