Global Antibiotic Resistance: From Clinical to Environmental Impacts

Dear Colleagues,
Overuse and misuse of antibiotics in human health, animal health, agricultural sectors, and livestock cause antibiotic resistance (AR). When a resistant pathogen is the dominant microorganism in an infection, the infection may be untreatable and life-threatening. Mortality rate due to AR is increasing on a global scale each year. Prediction models estimate the mortality rate could soar dramatically affecting medical, environmental, economic, and public health sectors worldwide. WHO along with organizations such as the CDC and the AR researchers unanimously agree that the spread of AR is an urgent crisis requiring robust and coordinated solutions. Such solutions necessitate greater understanding, coordination, interdisciplinary, and multisectoral actions on a global level. The goals of this webinar are as follows:
(i) To identify current opportunities and gaps in AR.
(ii) To mitigate the threat of AR at various levels such as clinical, public health, and the environment.
(iii) To showcase and update the existence of current scientific and clinical knowledge as continuing education for scientists, healthcare professionals, public health officers, and other groups with vested interest in AR.
(iv) To encourage open discussions among participants of this webinar about novel and innovative solutions to reduce the global burden of AR.
Therefore, the major aim of this webinar is to provide a “forum” where participants of various professional backgrounds explore solutions to current challenges of global AR, and most importantly, developing networking opportunities to foster international collaborations. We are seeking experienced leaders in the field of AR to deliver plenary talks. Certificate of webinar attendance will be issued upon request. Prof. Dr. Margaret Crumlish
Stirling University, Stirling, Scotland, UK;
Mags Crumlish is a Professor in Aquatic Microbiology at the Institute of Aquaculture, University of Stirling, UK. She has 25 years’ experience of working in global aquaculture focusing on Southeast Asian aquaculture sector where she has identified new diseases, and her research contributed to the production of the first commercially licensed vaccine for farmed catfish (P. hypophthalmus) in Vietnam. Her current research activities focus on bacterial pathogenesis, AMR detection/evaluation/mechanisms, and vaccination strategies, in collaboration with colleagues from Vietnam, Thailand, Indonesia, and Philippines. She adopts an interdisciplinary approach within her research and teaching to solve “real-world” problems and promote improved aquatic food security. She has written several book chapters, over 80 research publications and is a co-editor of the first Aquatic Food Security Book published in 2024. She manages a team of research students, technicians, and post docs whilst teaching BSc, MSc, and CPD programmes within the University of Stirling.
Prof. Dr. Anwar Hossain
Molecular Ecology and Health Laboratory, Ehime University, Japan;
Dr. Anwar Hossain is a Professor of Fisheries (Aquaculture Branch), Faculty of Biological Sciences, University of Dhaka. He obtained a PhD degree with the Dean’s and President’s Award in the field of Environmental Risk Management from Yokohama National University, Japan. He did a postdoc as a President fellow in the Molecular Ecology and Health Laboratory of Ehime University, Japan. Currently, he has been working as a JSPS researcher at Ehime University, Japan.
Dr. Hossain is a very enthusiastic researcher working with national and international scientists. He has been awarded as one of the best researchers in two consecutive years in the Faculty of Biological Sciences, University of Dhaka. Currently, he has several collaborative projects with several Asian Countries and Japanese. Furthermore, he has also collaborative research with Australian, American, and Canadian Universities. He has more than 50 publications in national and international reputed journals.
Dr. Ana Mateus
Antimicrobial Resistance and Veterinary Products Department, World Organisation for Animal Health, France;
Ana is a veterinarian by training and works as a Scientific Coordinator in the Antimicrobial Resistance and Veterinary Products Department at the World Organisation for Animal Health (WOAH) since October 2021. Her main areas of interest are integrated surveillance, antimicrobial stewardship, and evidence-based interventions and policy.
Previously, Ana was a senior lecturer in Veterinary Public Health at the Royal Veterinary College where she was responsible for teaching and supervising undergraduate and postgraduate students and was also involved actively in research on AMR and food safety. She also worked as a field epidemiologist at Public Health England in the UK where she was involved in outbreak investigations and surveillance. Ana is a diplomate of the European College of Veterinary Public Health and has a PhD in veterinary epidemiology. She also has a master’s degree in Veterinary Public Health from the University of Glasgow.
