New Challenges in Urban Underground Engineering
Welcome to this online seminar, which is technically supported by MDPI. The purpose of this online seminar is to provide a miniforum to promote the scientific research on Urban Underground Engineering that has emerged in recent years. With the increasing exploitation of underground space and construction of high-rise buildings in urban areas, numerous underground projects have emerged, constantly expanding in scale and depth. However, during the construction of urban underground engineering, various issues arise such as penetrative destruction, local dewatering, uplift pressure, and corrosivity. While research on urban land and underground space currently focuses primarily on engineering technology, a comprehensive analysis of the entire situation is necessary. To promote the scientific study on Urban Underground Engineering, Dr. Fang and I have launched a Special Issue in Applied Science entitled “New Challenges in Urban Underground Engineering”.
We have received eight submissions and two of them have been published. We are hoping researchers and scientists who are working on issues related to this Special Issue will consider submitting their papers to this SI. Today, we are happy to have three speakers join this online seminar: Drs. Fang, Cheng, and Zhang. All of them are young doctors and have worked on Urban Underground Engineering-related studies. They will present what they have done and what they have found.

Meet Our Speakers
Prof. Dr. Qian Fang
Key Laboratory for Urban Underground Engineering of Ministry of Education, Beijing Jiaotong University, China;
Qian Fang obtained his PhD from Beijing Jiaotong University, China, in 2010, and then took the position of lecturer, associate professor, and professor at the same institution. He is the director of department of underground engineering in Beijing Jiaotong University, and was chosen as the Youth Talent of Ten-Thousand Talents Plan in 2020. His research areas mainly cover structure design and safety control of underground engineering. He is the principal investigator (PI) of a key project of High-speed Rail Joint Fund of National Natural Science Foundation of China and the PI of two other projects supported by National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC). He serves as the deputy secretary of International Society for Rock Mechanics and Rock Engineering (ISRM) Commission on subsea tunnel, committee of the Rock Dynamics Commission of Chinese Society for Rock Mechanics and Engineering (CSRME), and committee of the Underwater Tunnel Engineering Technology Commission of CSRME. He has authored over 260 papers in peer-reviewed journals (Google Scholar h-index: 37). Among his publications, 110 papers are indexed by SCI, and 11 papers are ESI highly cited papers, and 3 papers are ESI hot papers.
Dr. Xuesong Cheng
Department of Civil Engineering, Tianjin University, China;
Dr. Xuesong Cheng is a Professor of Civil Engineering at Tianjin University, China. He also serves as Deputy Director of Department of Civil Engineering and Director of Laboratory of Underground Engineering at Tianjin University. He obtained his Ph.D. degree from Tianjin University in 2013. From 10/2011 to 10/2012, he worked as a visiting scholar at Cambridge University. From 2014 to 2016, he worked as a postdoc researcher at Tianjin University. His primary research interests include the progressive collapse problem and system safety performance of deep excavation and underground engineering, control of the influence of deep excavation on adjacent tunnel, braceless retaining structures of deep excavation, and recharge technology in deep excavation engineering. Dr. Cheng has published more than 100 journal papers. He has received several awards for excellence in research and teaching, including one First-class of Tianjin Science and Technology Award in 2017 (R12), one First-class of Tianjin Science and Technology Award in 2021 (R10), and one Second-class of Tianjin Science and Technology Award in 2021 (R1).
Prof. Dr. Sulei Zhang
School of Civil Engineering, Qingdao University of Technology, China;
Professor Sulei Zhang is a PhD supervisor and is currently serving as the head of the Urban Underground Space Engineering program at Qingdao University of Technology, the Vice Chairman of the Engineering Safety and Protection Professional Committee of the Shandong Rail Transit Society, the Vice Chairman of the Education Professional Committee of the Jiangsu Underground Space Society, a standing member of the Underground Space Engineering Professional Committee of Shandong Civil Engineering Society, and a member of the Underground Space Branch of Chinese Rock Force Engineering Society. His main research interests are urban underground engineering safety and security technology, underground structural health diagnosis and repair, underground engineering new materials and technologies, and underground engineering informationization and control. He has led over 30 research projects, has published over 80 papers, holds 17 patents, has co-authored 4 local and industry standards, and has received 6 awards, including the Shandong Province Teaching Achievement Award and the Qingdao City Science and Technology Progress Award.
