Additive Manufacturing and Topology Optimization of Microstructures

Topology optimization is the modern approach for flexible optimal design of structures and microstructures. Additive manufacturing, known also as rapid prototyping or 3D printing makes feasible the creation of structures of any shape and topology, including microstructures. Exchange of information between the two disciplines, the state of the art development and expected steps for the near future is the topic of the present webinar.

Dr. Loucas Papadakis

Department of Mechanical Engineering, Frederick University, Nicosia, Cyprus;
Mechanical engineer, expert in modelling and simulation of computational chains for supporting the product design, manufacturing and quality prediction of lightweight structures, adaptation of manufacturing process sequences including their physical phenomena into a multi-stage structural simulation chain by means of the finite element analysis, current main research interests are additive manufacturing, joining processes, crash simulation, product design and development, topology optimization.

Dr. Ioannis Ntintakis

Dr. Ioannis Ntintakis

School of Engineering, Department of Mechanical Engineering, Hellenic Mediterranean University, Iraklion, Greece;
Ioannis Ntintakis is a member of the Mechanical Engineering Department, Faculty of Engineering, of the Hellenic Mediterranean University since January 2019 on the position of Lecturer. From September 2010 until January 2019, he was a member of the Wood and Furniture Design & Technology Department of Technological Education Institute of Thessaly on the position of Lecturer. Ioannis Ntintakis awarded the title of Industrial Design Engineer at Technological Education Institute of West Macedonia in 2001. He holds a master’s degree (MSc) in Advanced Manufacturing Systems from Kingston University (UK) in 2006. He has a PhD degree in topology optimization for additive manufacturing from Technical University of Crete. He is a co-author in two books, and he is an author of seventeen articles in journals with judges. From 2001 to 2010 he has professional experience in the R&D departments of Greek industrial enterprises. His current main research interests are additive manufacturing, lightweight structures, topology optimization, homogenization, industrial design, and CAD/CAM systems.

On Tuesday 7th February 2023 , MDPI and the Journal Applied Sciences organized the 9th Webinar entitled “ Additive Manufacturing and Topology Optimization of Microstructures”. This online seminar was chaired by Prof. Dr. Georgios E. Stavroulakis from the Institute of Computational Mechanics and Optimization, School of Production Engineering and Management, Technical University of Crete, Chania, Greece. , Dr. Loucas Papadakis from the Department of Mechanical Engineering, Frederick University, Nicosia, Cyprus, and Dr. Ioannis Ntintakis from the school of Engineering, Department of Mechanical Engineering, Hellenic Mediterranean University, Iraklion, Greece.

The chairs were joined by three experts in mechanical engineering whom all presented on the topic of Topology optimization. The presentations were followed by a Q&A and a discussion, moderated by the Chair. The webinar was offered via Zoom and required registration to attend.
