We would like to thank MDPI for organizing this unique webinar focused on our MDPI Special Issue in novel biomaterials in bone and cartilage engineering (submission deadline: February 29, 2024). This Special Issue is still open for submissions. This Special Issue emphasizes new and novel biomaterials for numerous orthopedic applications. Did you know that the popular Charnley hip, still implanted today, was originally developed in the 1960s, while other than screws, there are no 100% successful FDA-approved cartilage replacement materials. This is exactly why we want to highlight new biomaterials in orthopedics that can finally advance the field. So, please join me and two leaders in the field, Dr. Thomas J. Webster and Dr. Anwar Hasan, who will discuss the latest in orthopedic materials in this webinar. And, of course, be sure to check out our Special Issue!

Prof. Dr. Thomas Jay Webster
Interdisciplinary Laboratory for Advanced Materials (LIMAV), Materials Science and Engineering Graduate Program (PPGCM), Federal University of Piaui (UFPI), Teresina, PI, Brazil;
Thomas J. Webster (H index: 122; Google Scholar) holds degrees in chemical engineering from the University of Pittsburgh (B.S., 1995; USA) and in biomedical engineering from RPI (Ph.D., 2000; USA). He has served as a professor at Purdue (2000-2005), Brown (2005-2012), and Northeastern (2012-2021; serving as Chemical Engineering Department Chair from 2012 - 2019) Universities and has formed over a dozen companies; these now create numerous FDA-approved medical products that are currently used to improve human health in over 30,000 patients. He is currently helping those companies and serves as a professor at Brown University, Saveetha University, Hebei University of Technology, and others. Dr. Webster has won numerous awards, including the following: 2020, World Top 2% Scientist by Citations (PLOS); 2020, SCOPUS Highly Cited Research (Top 1% Materials Science and Mixed Fields); 2021, Clarivate Top 0.1% Most Influential Researchers (Pharmacology and Toxicology); 2022, Best Materials Science Scientist by Citations (Research.com); and is a fellow of over eight societies. Prof. Webster is a former President of the U.S. Society For Biomaterials and has over 1,350 publications to his name, with over 55,000 citations. He was recently nominated for the Nobel Prize in Chemistry. Prof. Webster also recently formed a fund to support Nigerian student research opportunities in the U.S.
Prof. Dr. Anwarul Hasan

Dr. Anwarul Hasan is an Associate Professor in the Department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering and in the Biomedical Research Center at Qatar University, an adjunct Professor in the Biomedical Engineering Department at the University of Alberta, Canada, and a Visiting Associate Professor at Terasaki Institute, Los Angeles, USA. He previously worked as an Assistant Professor of Biomedical and Mechanical Engineering at the American University of Beirut, Lebanon, and a visiting Assistant Professor and an NSERC Post Doctoral Fellow at Harvard University and Massachusetts Institute of Technology, USA. Dr Hasan completed his PhD in Mechanical Engineering at the University of Alberta, Canada, in 2010. He has published more than 250 journal papers, 30 conference proceedings articles, 8 book chapters, and 2 edited books. He is the winner of more than sixteen national and international awards and has received more than USD 6.6 million in grant funding. Dr Hasan was listed in the Clarivate/Web of Science’s prestigious top 0.1% Highly Cited Researchers’ list—2023 and in the top 2% highly cited researchers in the field of Biomedical Engineering consistently in 2020, 2021, 2022, and 2023. Dr Hasan is a member of the IEEE Engineering in Medicine and Biology Society, the Society for Biomaterials and Tissue Engineering, and the Regenerative Medicine International Society. His current research interests involve biomaterials, tissue engineering, 3D bioprinting, diabetic wound healing, cancer, and machine learning, and artificial intelligence in health care applications.
