Biomedicines Reviewer Club 2026
Welcome to our Biomedicines Reviewer Club 2026. We are pleased to host this ceremony to thank the exceptional and outstanding reviewers for their efforts and to present this roundtable discussion to further explore peer review and future trends in biomedical research.
In recent years, scholarly publishing has witnessed profound transformations. The demand for greater transparency and efficiency in peer review continues to grow, even as publication volumes surge and the reviewer pool faces increasing pressure. In response, innovative approaches have emerged to streamline processes and better align them with authors' needs. The integration of artificial intelligence tools, for instance, is gradually automating administrative tasks, enabling reviewers to focus on the most critical aspects of evaluation. While these shifts are reshaping the publishing ecosystem, the core value of peer review remains unchanged: it is the primary mechanism for ensuring the rigor, credibility, and impact of scientific research.
At the same time, biomedical research itself is undergoing a paradigm shift. Breakthroughs in technologies such as single-cell sequencing, spatial transcriptomics, and advanced imaging are providing unprecedented insights into disease mechanisms. Emerging fields like organoid engineering, CRISPR-based therapies, and mRNA vaccines are redefining what is possible in personalized medicine.

Prof. Dr. Philip Calder
Faculty of Medicine, University of Southampton, Southampton, UK;
Dr Philip Calder is Professor of nutritional immunology in the Faculty of Medicine, University of Southampton, Southampton, UK. He is an internationally recognised researcher on nutritional immunology and the metabolism and functionality of fatty acids, with an emphasis on the roles of omega-3 fatty acids. His research has both life courses and translational perspectives.
Dr. Nicoletta Cera
Laboratory of Neuropsychophysiology, Faculty of Psychology and Education Sciences, University of Porto, Portugal;
Dr. Nicoletta Cera is a researcher at the Laboratory of Neuropsychophysiology at the Faculty of Psychology and Education Sciences at the University of Porto and CrossI&D at Escola Superior de Saúde da Cruz Vermelha Portuguesa of Lisbon. Her expertise spans methodology, neuroimaging, and psychophysiology. She is actually interested in metabolic and neuroelectric alterations in women with PCOS.
Dr. Marcin Kurowski

Dr. Marcin Kurowski is an Associate Professor at the Department of Immunology and Allergy, Medical University of Łódź, Poland. He is a board-certified physician in Internal Medicine, Allergy, and Clinical Immunology. Apart from clinical activities in the field of allergy and immunology, he carries out research focusing on the influence of exercise on immune response and allergic inflammation, food allergy and hypersensitivity, hereditary and acquired angioedema, and the biological treatment of allergic disease.
Dr. Paweł Nadziakiewicz
Department of Anesthesiology and Intensive Therapy, Silesian Centre for Heart Diseases, Medical University of Silesia, Katowice, Poland;
Dr Pawel Nadziakiewicz is Associate Professor of anesthesia and intensive therapy in the Faculty of Medicine in Medical University of Silesia in Katowice, Poland. He is specially interested in cardiac anesthesia and cardiac intensive care. He is involved in investigation of pathomechanisms underlying organ failure in presence of circulatory disturbances. He is introducing the new markers of kidney and liver function in patients’ assessment due to broader use of mechanical circulatory support and heart transplantation. These facts engaged him in research field of management of cardiogenic shock, acute and chronic heart failure. and multiorgan failure.

Drug Discovery, Development and Delivery
This Section of Biomedicines (ISSN 2227-9059) publishes original and innovative scientific papers, as well as comprehensive review papers. It is organized into topics mainly covering drug discovery, drug design, basic and clinical pharmacology, formulation and delivery, and toxicology.
The Outstanding Reviewer Award is given annually to recognize reviewers who generously contribute their time to reviewing papers and display thoroughness, professionalism, and timeliness while doing so. Winners will be chosen from all previous year's reviewers and revealed by the end of March each year.
