Prof. Jorge Lino Alves
Institute of Science and Innovation in Mechanical and Industrial Engineering (INEGI), Faculty of Engineering (FEUP), University of Porto;
Jorge Lino Alves, Mechanical Engineer, PhD in Materials Science, Full Professor at the Department of Mechanical Engineering at FEUP, Porto, Portugal. Is the Director of the Master's Degree in Product and Industrial Design (U.Porto), Director of the DESIGN STUDIO FEUP, Director of Product and Services Development Laboratory, and Past President of the Portuguese Society of Materials (SPM). Develops research in the area of product development and additive manufacturing. Co-author of 9 books, has published over 523 papers in journals, conferences and book chapters, and has 86 posters. Has a record of community design or model and a patent, videos about technological innovation and has over 33 awards in national and international competitions and other events. Is reviewer of several scientific journals, and is the director of the Journal Science and Technology of Materials (SPM).
Prof. Barbara Rangel
Institute of R&D in Structures and Construction (CONSTRUCT), Faculty of Engineering (FEUP), University of Porto;
Architect and Assistant Professor at the Civil Engineering Department of the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Porto (FEUP), where she received her MsC and PhD in Civil Engineering. She started her career working with Rafale Moneo and Álvaro Siza. Her scientific research is in between architecture and engineering, finding an Integrated Project Design with a focus on 3DP for construction and Modular Construction. She runs DIGI@feup a multidisciplinary platform focused on construction industrialization concerning 3D printing and modular construction, working in various projects with the industry and other research canters as INEGI and MIT. She is the director Master's Degree in Integrated Building Design and Construction. She is editor of Cadernos d’Obra and Sebentas d’Obra, a guest Editor for Springer and Taylors and Francis. She has published more than 50 papers and book chapters.
Prof. Valentino Sangiorgio
Department of Engineering and Geology (INGEO), D’Annunzio University of Chieti—Pescara, Italy;
Assistant Professor (tenure track) in Building Engineering at the University of Chieti-Pescara, Director of the Digital Fabrication Lab (UdA, INGEO Department – link), President of the FabLab Bitonto Association, and Engineer. He holds a Ph.D. cum laude in Risk and Environmental, Territorial, and Building Development. His research addresses the challenges of the digital transformation in the construction sector, requiring a high level of interdisciplinary collaboration to reconcile traditional civil engineering concepts with new technologies and advanced performance analysis approaches. At the Digital Fabrication Lab, he coordinates an interdisciplinary research team composed of one Assistant Professor, one postdoctoral fellow, two research fellows, three PhD students, and four trainees. He has extensive experience in laboratory management, gained over seven years (2017–2025) as President and member of the Board of Directors of FabLab Poliba. Prof. Sangiorgio has successfully secured funding for 10 research projects—including 4 as PI or Co-PI—amounting to €5.5 million in direct funding and contributions to projects exceeding €23.4 million.
Assoc. Prof. Sandra Lucas
Department of the Built Environment, Eindhoven University of Technology;
Sandra Lucas is an Associate Professor in autonomous manufacturing of construction materials in the research group Concrete Structures at the TU/e Department of the Built Environment (unit Structural Design). Sandra’s research goal is to understand how machine learning and data science accelerate the discovery and development of new construction materials that are functionally advanced and environmentally sustainable. This involves synthesising materials with embedded functionalities that adapt to environmental conditions or mitigate impacts. She is the project leader of two NWO projects to develop smart and sustainable 3D-printed concrete. Prior to this position, she was a senior lecturer in construction materials and sustainability at the University of Greenwich. She was the PI for several projects within academia and in collaboration with industry through the Innovate UK funding agency.
Mr. Manuel Jesus
Institute of R&D in Structures and Construction (CONSTRUCT), Faculty of Engineering (FEUP), University of Porto;
Manuel Jesus is a Civil Engineer and PhD candidate in Civil Engineering at the Faculty of Engineering, University of Porto (FEUP), where he also serves as an Invited Assistant Professor. His research focuses on 3D printing and 3D surveying technologies applied to construction, particularly in the context of built heritage. Manuel has authored several peer-reviewed articles, book chapters, and conference papers on additive manufacturing and related topics. He participated in the FCT-funded project TherBlock3Dp – 3D Printing of Thermal Blocks as a research fellow and co-supervised a master’s dissertation at FEUP. He also completed specialized training in Robotic Manufacturing in Design, Architecture, and Construction at the University of Minho.

3D Printing in Construction
The webinar “3D Printing in Construction” gathered European experts from academia and research institutions to discuss recent advances, challenges, and future perspectives of additive manufacturing in the construction sector. The session highlighted how 3D printing technologies are transforming design and construction processes by improving efficiency, sustainability, and innovation.
Five speakers presented complementary perspectives covering layered construction methodologies, digital design approaches for 3D concrete printing, robotics integration in construction and repair, development of smart and sustainable concrete materials, and optimisation of printable mortars for built heritage rehabilitation.
The discussions demonstrated that 3D printing is rapidly becoming a practical solution within the construction industry, enabling new architectural possibilities and more sustainable building practices. The webinar emphasized the importance of continued collaboration between academia, industry, and research organisations to overcome existing challenges and fully realise the potential of digital construction technologies.
Overall, the event provided a valuable platform for knowledge exchange, fostering dialogue and encouraging future research and cooperation in 3D printing for construction.
