Welcome to the webinar, "Hybrid CO₂-to-Syngas Technologies: Integrating Catalysis, Plasma, and Electrochemical Pathways." As Chair, it is my great pleasure to welcome this diverse community of researchers and industry pioneers, dedicated to tackling one of the most pressing challenges of our time: transforming carbon emissions into valuable chemical feedstocks. Today’s session will explore the cutting edge of CO₂ valorization by moving beyond isolated techniques to examine the powerful synergies unlocked when catalytic, plasma-driven, and electrochemical processes are combined.

By bridging these distinct fields, we aim to uncover novel ways to overcome traditional thermodynamic barriers, boost energy efficiency, and accelerate the scale-up of sustainable green syngas production. I encourage you to actively engage with our expert speakers and one another as we collaborate to shape the future of industrial decarbonization and clean energy technology.

Dr. Kok Keong Lau

Dr. Kok Keong Lau

Department of Chemical Engineering, Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS (UTP), Malaysia;
Assoc. Prof. Ir Dr Lau Kok Keong is currently the Director of the Centre for Sustainable Energy, Environment, and Social Innovation (SEnSI), Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS, UTP. He is a Chartered Marine Engineer (UK) and Professional Engineer in Malaysia. His expertise covers Carbon Capture and Utilization, including membrane separation, absorption, simulation, and process scale-up. Dr Lau has published more than 130 high-impact journals and have been participating in various consultancy and research projects with a total value of > USD 5 million. He also actively collaborates with various research institutions and companies from different countries, including Thailand, Netherland, Denmark, UK, etc. In terms of innovation, he has filed more than 10 patents/copyrights and commercialized 1 software product.

Dr. Shahid Rasul

Dr. Shahid Rasul

Faculty of Engineering and Environment, Northumbria University, United Kingdom;
Professor Dr. Shahid is the founder of IONIST and is currently working at the forefront of sustainable energy innovation, with a mission to fuel the future. His research group is dedicated to the development of clean fuels through the electrochemical and catalytic conversion of water and CO₂, with a particular focus on Sustainable Aviation Fuels (SAFs) and novel water-based propulsion systems for space applications. He also led the Battery Innovation Strategy at Northumbria University, where his work spans next-generation energy storage technologies, including advanced sodium-ion and lithium-based systems, including battery recycling. His goal is to accelerate the transition to a net-zero future through scalable, high-performance electrochemical solutions.

Dr. Bawadi Abdullah

Dr. Bawadi Abdullah

Department of Chemical Engineering, King Faisal University, Saudi Arabia;
Dr. Bawadi is an Associate Professor of Chemical Engineering at King Faisal University, Saudi Arabia. He has over 20 years of experience as a seasoned academic and researcher at Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS. In the past 25 years, his research has focused on hydrogen/syngas production and catalysis. He has over 150 indexed publications as well as granted patents. He is listed in Stanford's Top 2% of Scientists (2021, 2023, 2024).

Dr. Herma Dina Setiabudi

Faculty of Chemical and Process Engineering Technology, Universiti Malaysia Pahang Al-Sultan Abdullah (UMPSA), Malaysia;
Dr Herma Dina is an Associate Professor at the Faculty of Chemical and Process Engineering Technology, Universiti Malaysia Pahang Al-Sultan Abdullah (UMPSA), Malaysia, and concurrently serves as the Director of the Centre for Global Engagement. With a remarkable decade of service at UMPSA, she has achieved numerous accomplishments. As Director, she shoulders the responsibility of overseeing strategic global partnerships. As a researcher, she has authored over 150 peer-reviewed articles in the areas of chemical engineering, energy, and catalysis. She has also served as a Guest Editor and reviewer for numerous high-impact journals published by ACS, Elsevier, Springer, and more. In recognition of her expertise, she was appointed as a consultant, external examiner, judge, and visiting professor. Her journey represents the fusion of leadership, scholarship, and unwavering dedication. Additionally, her extensive contributions to research in chemical engineering, energy, and catalysis, as well as her role as a Guest Editor and reviewer for prestigious journals, exemplify her profound involvement in areas related to catalyst development and hydrogen production.
