In Situ/Operando Catalyst Characterization

The new trends on development of more efficient and sustainable catalysts are increasingly boosting the design, synthesis and application of innovative operational approaches at industrial and academic level. Higher efficiency targets associated to catalytic processes are strongly related to a superior performance of catalytic systems, in terms of enhanced activity-selectivity patterns and lifetime. Furthermore, an efficient catalyst should meet the requisites of low cost as well as environmentally and user-friendly.

An emerging approach is studying catalysts under process conditions by in situ and operando spectroscopy, in order to gain knowledge for a tailored design of new catalysts or the optimization of existing systems already employed in the chemical industry.

The ambition of the webinar "In Situ/Operando Catalyst Characterization" is to highlight the new trends on characterization techniques for studying the catalyst under reaction conditions, so to get in-depth insights into the nature of active sites, complex reaction kinetics and reaction mechanisms.

Key messages launched over various showcases will be presented by two eminent scientists in the inherent field. In the first lecture, Prof. Bert Weckhuysen will focus on a general short history as well as the main principles of the in-situ and operando characterization of solid catalysts, with a main focus on the aspects of temporal resolution (e.g., pulsed experimentation) and spatial resolution (e.g., nano-spectroscopy). In the second lecture, Dr. Frederic Meunier will show the potential of quantitative operando IR spectroscopy to determine the role of adsorbates as reaction intermediates or spectator species for various reactions.

Dr. Giuseppe Bonura

Dr. Giuseppe Bonura

Italian National Research Council (CNR) – Institute for Advanced Energy Technologies (ITAE) “Nicola Giordano”, Italy;
Giuseppe Bonura graduated in Industrial Chemistry in 2002 and received his Ph.D. in “Chemical Processes and Innovative Technologies” at the University of Messina (Italy) in 2009. Currently, he’s senior researcher at the Institute for Advanced Energy Technologies “Nicola Giordano” of the National Research Council in Messina. His scientific interests deal with the development of catalytic systems for the production al clean alternative fuels. Currently, he is responsible for several International and National research projects, especially in the frame of CCU technologies and catalytic applications for the production of alternative carbon-neutral fuels. He is a scientific expert, evaluator and monitor, regularly assisting the EU Executive Agencies in the context of research and innovation programmes, dealing with topics on Climate & Environment, Energy, Transport & Mobility. He is also included in the Register of Expert Peer-Reviewers for Italian Scientific Evaluation (REPRISE).

Dr. Catia Cannilla

Dr. Catia Cannilla

Italian National Research Council (CNR) – Institute for Advanced Energy Technologies (ITAE) “Nicola Giordano”, Italy;
She is researcher at CNR-ITAE since 2008. She received her PhD in Chemical Technologies and Innovative Processes at the University of Messina. Her scientific interest is mainly addressed in the field of heterogeneous catalysis with particular reference to the development of catalytic materials for energetic purpose and preparation of clean alternative fuels. She gained considerable experience in the use of several techniques for the bulk and surface physico-chemical characterization of materials, by studying the interaction of probe molecules with surface catalysts and the analytical, morphological and structural properties. Her interest is now focused towards the understanding of the reaction mechanisms of catalytic reactions by exploiting the potential of FTIR spectroscopy in operando mode. She is Scientific Responsible of National research projects and she is involved in the activities of several research projects in collaboration with universities and/or national and international research groups. She is Guest Editor of Special Issues for Catalyst and Membrane, Topic Editor for MPDI Journals, Editorial Board Member for Catalyst.

On Wednesday, 20 April 2022, MDPI and the Journal Catalysts organized the 11th webinar on Catalysts, entitled "In Situ/Operando Catalyst Characterization".

The introduction was held by the first Chair of the webinar, Dr. Giuseppe Bonura, who is senior researcher at the Institute for Advanced Energy Technologies “Nicola Giordano” of the National Research Council in Messina. The first speaker to quick off this webinar was Prof. Dr. Bert M. Weckhuysen, with his presentation "Advances in the Operando and In-Situ Characterization of Solid Catalysts: Principles, Potential Pitfalls and Showcases". He is Distinguished University Professor Catalysis, Energy and Sustainability at Utrecht University.

The second Chair of the webinar, Dr. Catia Cannilla, introduced the second part of the webinar. She is researcher at CNR-ITAE since 2008 and she received her PhD in Chemical Technologies and Innovative Processes at the University of Messina. The second speaker, Dr. Frederic Meunier presented his work entitled "Quantitative Operando IR Studies Involving Carbon Monoxide: Examples of Catalytic Hydrogenation and Oxidation". He is a CNRS Director of Research based at the Institute for Research on Catalysis and the Environment in Lyon (IRCELYON), France.

The presentations were followed by a Q&A and a discussion, moderated by the Chairs Dr. Giuseppe Bonura & Dr. Catia Cannilla. The webinar was offered via Zoom and required registration to attend.
