Epigenetics in Myeloproliferative Neoplasms and Acute Myeloid Leukemia
Research over recent years has revealed the increasingly intricate landscape of acute myeloid leukemia (AML) and myeloproliferative neoplasms (MPN). Today it is well-appreciated that the heterogeneity of malignant cells in both diseases is triggered by sets of cytogenetic abnormalities and somatic mutations. In addition to this genetic complexity, diversification in the epigenome has also been identified as a key player in both tumors. The multidimensional epigenetic picture integrates several layers of (dys)regulated DNA methylation, histone modification, and microRNA modulation. Indeed, abnormal epigenetic signatures, some of which may be linked to specific somatic mutations, frequently present in AML and MPN can profoundly disrupt the phenotype of hematopoietic cells. Furthermore, epigenetic (dys)regulation has emerged as an intersection of several key hallmarks of cancer such as immunology and metabolism.
Thus, understanding the functional link between genetic and epigenetic heterogeneity in AML and MPN, and what they contribute to the disease is an important area of research that would aid clinical decision-making and enhance drug development.
This webinar features several eminent experts in the field of epigenetic in AML and MPN.

Dr. Haifa Kathrin Al-Ali
Krukenberg cancer Cancer Center (KKH), University Hospital Halle (Saale), Germany;
Dr. Haifa Kathrin Al-Ali has been working as a senior physician at the University Clinic for Internal Medicine IV since August 1st, 2016. Her clinical focus includes the treatment of patients with acute and chronic malignant myeloid diseases [myeloproliferative neoplasias (MPN), myelodysplatic syndrome (MDS), acute myeloid leukemia (AML)]. The scientific focus of her work is the implementation of clinical studies and the investigation of the relevance of genetic and epigenetic changes in malignant myeloid diseases.
On Thursday, 21 October 2021, MDPI and the Journal Cells organized the 12th webinar on Cells, entitled "Epigenetics in Myeloproliferative Neoplasms and Acute Myeloid Leukemia". Chaired by Dr. Haifa Kathrin Al-Ali from Krukenberg cancer Cancer Center (KKH) and University Hospital Halle (Saale) in Germany, the webinar discussed how understanding the functional link between genetic and epigenetic heterogeneity in acute myeloid leukemia (AML) and myeloproliferative neoplasms (MPN) could help in the diagnosis, prognosis, treatment and and enhance drug development in the field.
The first speaker to kick off the webinar was Dr. Michael Cross, from University of Leipzig in Germany who discussed how aza-nucleosides affect myeloid cell fate. After him, Dr. Florian Perner from University Medicine Greifswald in Germany, and Dana-Farber Cancer Institute & Harvard Medical School in USA, followed with his talk focused on targeting aberrant MLL-complexes and chromatin in myeloid malignancies. Finally, the chair Dr. Haifa Kathrin Al-Ali discussed the potentials of epigenetic modulation as an add-on player in both diseases.
A Q&A session moderated by the chair was held at the end of the webinar to answer any questions submitted by live online audience and a to further the connections and discussion between the panelists.
