Dear colleagues,
As the Editor-in-Chief of the Section “Molecular Organics” of the journal Chemistry (ISSN: 2624-8549), it is a pleasure for me to chair this Webinar, entitled “Future Trends in Catalytic Organic Synthesis”.
The webinar aims to present some of the latest advancements in the application of analysis to organic synthesis and will serve as a platform to promote the molecular organics section of our journal as a scientific forum in this field.
Four seminars have been planned, and these will be presented by three members of the Editorial Board of our section (Prof. Bartolo Gabriele, Prof. Angelo Frongia, Dr. Damiano Tanini) and Prof. Alberto Martínez Cuezva, who are all experts in catalysis and organic chemistry.

Meet Our Speakers
Prof. Dr. Bartolo Gabriele
Laboratory of Industrial and Synthetic Organic Chemistry (LISOC), Department of Chemistry and Chemical Technologies, University of Calabria, Arcavacata di Rende, Italy;
Prof. Bartolo Gabriele completed his PhD in “Chemical Sciences” in 1994 at the University of Calabria (UNICAL). In 1997, he joined Professor Ronald Breslow’s group at Columbia University (New York) for 1 year as a NATO-CNR fellow. In 1998, he returned to UNICAL, where he was promoted to Associate Professor in 2002 and to Full Professor in 2006. His current research interests include the synthesis of high-value-added molecules via catalytic techniques and the development of novel materials for advanced applications. His current scientific production includes more than 245 articles in international peer-reviewed journals (h-index: 53; Scopus citations: 9086), more than 15 chapters in international books, and 20 industrial patents. Prof. Gabriele has recently edited the book Carbon Monoxide in Organic Synthesis – Carbonylation Chemistry for Wiley-VCH (2022). He received the “Research Award” in the field of “Synthetic Organic Chemistry” in 2013 from the Italian Chemical Society, and since 2020, he has been included in the World's Top 2% Scientist list: “Updated science-wide author databases of standardized citation indicators” (Elsevier Data Repository). He has been involved, as a coordinator or participant, in many national and international projects; in particular, he was scientifically responsible for UNICAL in the EU RIA H2020 project “VicInAqua” (Integrated aquaculture based on sustainable water recirculating system for the Victoria Lake Basin).
Dr. Damiano Tanini

Damiano Tanini received his PhD in Chemistry in 2015 from the University of Florence while working on the stereoselective synthesis of functionalized cyclic and open-chain sulfur- and selenium-containing compounds through the reactivity of thiosilanes and organoselenosilanes. He carried out part of his doctoral research at the University of Bristol, working with Prof. V. K. Aggarwal. D. Tanini is currently an Assistant Professor of Organic Chemistry at the University of Florence. His research interests currently centre on organic synthesis, ranging from the development of novel sustainable methodologies for synthetic intermediates and bioactive molecules to the study of chalcogen-catalyzed transformations and molecular chirality. His research activity also focuses on the development and study of antioxidants and enzyme modulators. D. Tanini has published more than 70 scientific papers and book chapters. He serves as an Editorial Board Member and referee of several journals in the field of chemistry and biochemistry. In 2019, he was awarded the Prize for Research in Methodological Aspects of Organic Chemistry from the Italian Chemical Society.
Prof. Dr. Angelo Frongia

Angelo Frongia was born in Cagliari (Italy) in 1973. He graduated and received his PhD degree in Organic Chemistry from the University of Cagliari under the supervision of Prof. P. P. Piras. In 2001, he joined Dr. Jacques Salaün at the Laboratoire des Carbocycles (CNRS), Paris, France, as a postdoctoral fellow. During his studies (2002-2008), he completed internships within the group of Prof. P. P. Piras at the University of Cagliari.Following collaborative post-doctoral research (from the 3rd of December 2008 to the 24th of September 2009) in the group of Prof. D. J. Aitken in the “Institut de Chimie Moléculaire et des Matériaux d'Orsay”, University Paris Sud, France, he started his independent career at the “Dipartimento di Scienze Chimiche e Geologiche” (University of Cagliari) in 2010. He is currently an Associate Professor of Organic Chemistry at the Faculty of Sciences. His research interests focus on the synthesis and reactivity of strained carbocycles, and asymmetric organocatalytic reactions.
Dr. Alberto Martinez-Cuezva

Dr. Alberto Martinez-Cuezva obtained his PhD in 2010 from the University of Burgos (Spain) while working on the development of novel (metal-based and organocatalyzed) catalytic systems and their application to asymmetric processes. During his studies, he undertook two stays in the USA at the Scripps Research Institute (2007) and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (2008). After his PhD, he moved to the group of Prof. Benjamin List (Max Planck Institut für Kohlenforschung, Germany, 2010-2013), where he improved his skills in the development of asymmetric organocatalyzed transformations. In 2013, he started his career at the University of Murcia (Spain) with a Marie Curie postdoctoral fellowship, working on the synthesis and study of mechanically interlocked molecules. In 2019, he was funded with the prestigiuous “Ramón y Cajal” contract at the same institution, and since December 2022, he has been an Assistant Professor at the same institution.
He is the co-author of a total of 58 research articles in indexed international journals. His work has been presented at more than 50 congresses and invited seminars.
He has been recognized with various awards: ”Best Degree Qualification” (Univ. Burgos, 2005); “VII Premio Lilly de Investigación” (Lilly Spain, 2009); “Best Ph.D. thesis” (Univ. Burgos, 2011); finalist at “VI Premios Suschem-PostDoc” (2014); and "Thieme Chemistry Journal Awardees 2021".
