Prof. Jaakko Tuomilehto

Professor Jaakko Tuomilehto, MD, MA, PhD, FRCP(Edin), FESC is Professor Emeritus of Public Health at the University of Helsinki, Finland, and Visiting Professor at the National School of Public Health, Madrid, Spain. Renowned for his work in diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and public health, he has led groundbreaking research projects, including the WHO DIAMOND Project, which mapped global type 1 diabetes (T1D) incidence and identified Finland as having the world’s highest rates.
His Finnish Diabetes Prevention Study (DPS) demonstrated a 58% reduction in type 2 diabetes (T2D) incidence through lifestyle changes, inspiring national prevention programs and the FINDRISC diabetes risk tool. He has also advanced understanding of genetic factors in T1D and T2D.
Professor Tuomilehto has earned over 30 prestigious awards, mentored 130 doctoral fellows, and published more than 2,000 papers. As one of the world’s most-cited researchers, his h-index of 290 reflects his influence across diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and public health.

ZVI LARON MD Phd (hc) Professor Emeritus, Tel Aviv University Medical School, Director of Endocrinology and Diabetes Research Unit, Schneider Children’s Medical Center, Israel. 1952 – Graduated from Hebrew University Medical School, Jerusalem, Israel. 1952-1954 – Pediatric Residency – Rambam Hospital, Haifa, Israel. 1954-1955 and 1956-1957 – Postgraduate Fellowship in Pediatric Endocrinology, Massachusetts General Hospital, Harvard Medical School, Boston. 1955-1956 – Fellowship in Pediatric Endocrinology Pittsburgh Children’s Hospital, PA. 1958-1992 – Head Institute for Pediatric Endocrinology and Diabetes, Beilinson/Schneider Children’s Medical Center, Israel. 1993-to present – Director, Endocrinology and Diabetes Research Unit, Schneider Children’s Medical Center. Zvi Laron is author of 947 peer reviewed scientific articles and author/editor of 30 books. Co-founder, Secretary and past President of ISPAD. Co-founder and twice-past President of ESPE. Co-founder Growth Hormone IGF Society. Zvi Laron has received numerous international prizes including ISPAD and ESPE prizes, and received 5 honorary PhD’s. He is known for the introduction of the Multidisciplinary team treatment of children with diabetes and for the discovery of a type of dwarfism named Laron Syndrome after him.
Dr. Desmond Schatz

Dr Schatz is a Professor of Pediatrics, Medical Director of the Diabetes Institute, and Director of the Clinical Research Center within the CTSI at the University of Florida, Gainesville. He served as President of Science and Medicine of the American Diabetes Association in 2016. He has been involved in type 1 diabetes research since the mid-1980s and has published over 400 manuscripts, the majority related to the prediction, natural history, genetics, immunopathogenesis, and prevention of the disease, as well as the management of children and adolescents with type 1 diabetes. He is the Principal Investigator (PI) on several NIH awards and has been continuously funded since the mid-1990s. He is the recipient of multiple awards, including the Mary Tyler Moore and S Robert Levine JDRF Excellence in Clinical Research Award, the 2009 Cure Award from the American Diabetes Association, the Public Policy Leadership Award, the prestigious Banting Medal for service from the American Diabetes Association, the ISPAD Prize for achievement (the highest honor of the International Society for Pediatric and Adolescent Diabetes), and the distinguished George Eisenbarth Award from the JDRF for outstanding research advances toward the prevention of type 1 diabetes. He has also been elected into the prestigious Academy of Science, Engineering and Medicine of Florida (ASEMFL).
Prof. Olga Kordonouri

Olga Kordonouri is a pediatrician and pediatric diabetologist. She is Head of the Department of General Pediatrics, Diabetology, Endocrinology and Clinical Research as well as of the Emergency Room and the Day Care Unit at the Children’s Hospital AUF DER BULT in Hannover, Germany. Since October 2019, she has been Medical Director of the Children’s Hospital AUF DER BULT, after serving as the Vice Medical Director from June 2011 to September 2019.
Professor Kordonouri studied at the Medical School of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, Greece, and received her professorship in pediatrics, specializing in pediatrics and pediatric diabetology at the Charité Universitätsmedizin Berlin, Germany. Since 2008, she has held an extraordinary professorship at the Medical School of Hannover, Germany.
She is currently President of the Northern German Society for Children and Adolescent Medicine.
Professor Kordonouri has an extensive research and publication portfolio, focusing on insulin analogs; insulin infusion pumps; continuous glucose monitoring; closed-loop systems; type 1 diabetes-associated autoimmune diseases; and primary, secondary, and tertiary prevention programs. She has performed more than 60 clinical trials as Principal Investigator/Deputy Principal Investigator and has more than 240 publications.

The great advances in technology in recent years in the fields of genetics, biochemistry, metabolism and treatment have led to the development of new diagnostic tools, prevention of diseases (including preventive diagnosis of metabolic and endocrine disorders), the development of new drugs, and new therapeutic approaches.
The scope of the Pediatric Endocrinology & Diabetes Section of Children is to help disseminate the continuously increasing research into clinical practice. It publishes scholarly, peer-reviewed articles in all areas of Clinical and Experimental Endocrinology, Diabetes, Nutrition, Metabolism, and Genetics.
The Pediatric Endocrinology & Diabetes Section of Children is intended for pediatric endocrinologists, pediatric diabetologists, pediatric gastroenterologists, neonatologists, pediatric gynecologists, nutritionists, sport physicians, geneticists, practicing pediatricians, and pediatricians-in-training. It will also publish Special Issues in the above fields of interest.
