 4th Coatings Webinar

Unlocking Zeta Potential for Surface Coating Characterization

Dear colleagues, distinguished speakers, and participants,

On behalf of the Webinar chair, we are delighted to welcome you to this Webinar entitled “Unlocking Zeta Potential for Surface Coating Characterization”.

The surface is the visiting card of a material for its working environment; proper surface design and modification play a crucial role in the optimization of materials’ performances. In this context, innovative surface characterization techniques are fundamental tools, whose use ranges from the design to the final evaluation of advanced materials. Zeta potential can effectively give insights into the acid–basic properties and chemical stability of surfaces, as well as being a powerful tool for the investigation of coatings and surface modifications.

This Webinar will offer an introduction to the technique and its applications, featuring talks related to Zeta potential applications focused on surface modifications and Coatings in the Biomaterials field.

Dr. Thomas Luxbacher

Anton Paar, Austria;Dr. Thomas Luxbacher is a Principal Scientist at Anton Paar GmbH, specializing in surface charge and zeta potential. He obtained his M.Sc. and Ph.D. in Technical Chemistry / Physical Chemistry from the Graz University of Technology (TU Graz) in Austria. Early in his career, he worked in product management within the semiconductor and automotive industries. Dr. Luxbacher joined Anton Paar in 2003, where he served as the Product Manager for solid surface zeta potential analyzers for over 15 years before transitioning into his current role as Principal Scientist. His work focuses on electrokinetic surface analysis, membrane fouling, streaming potential techniques, and surface functionalization across biomaterials, polymers, and separation technologies. He has contributed to 115 scientific papers and is also the author of The ZETA Guide: Principles of the Streaming Potential Technique.

Ms. Anna Rossanese

Department of Applied Science and Technology (DISAT), Politecnico di Torino, Italy;Anna Rossanese is a Ph.D. student in Materials Science and Technology at the Department of Applied Science and Technology (DISAT), Politecnico di Torino, Italy. Her research focuses on surface modification and functionalization of titanium implants and collagen scaffolds, in an antibacterial and anti-inflammatory context.

Dr. Camilla Reggio

Department of Applied Science and Technology (DISAT), Politecnico di Torino, Italy;Dr. Camilla Reggio is a researcher in Materials Science and Technology within the Department of Applied Science and Technology (DISAT) at Politecnico di Torino, Italy. Having completed her background in Biomedical Engineering and Materials Engineering at Politecnico di Torino, she conducts her academic research within the GLANCE group, collaborating closely with senior researchers including Prof. Sara Ferraris and Prof. Silvia Spriano. She spent one year as a research fellow in Japan at Kanazawa Medical University. Her research focuses primarily on the surface modification of metallic implants, particularly titanium and its alloys, to optimize biological responses for medical applications. She specializes in developing multifunctional bioactive coatings designed to enhance osseointegration. Her Ph.D. focused on the adsorption of fibrinogen and bovine serum albumin on titanium surfaces after different modifications to understand how protein adsorption can affect the biological response. Additionally, her work investigates antibacterial and functional surface treatments utilizing natural molecules like polyphenols and localized drug delivery mechanisms to reduce inflammation and prevent implant-associated infections. Using advanced characterization tools such as XPS, FE-SEM, and zeta potential analysis, along with in vitro biological assays, she evaluates and refines the interfacial properties of next-generation biomaterials.
