Drones Technologies
Drones have caused an unprecedented impact on society and the economy and have quickly become key in the production chains of many companies and institutions. There is no need to define them, as their ability to perform missions autonomously is well known. But drones cover more than just airborne platforms, but also underwater and ground-based platforms. Similarly, drones are allowing new applications and niche markets to be defined through new sensors and developments in communications and increased real-time autonomous response capability. This webinar is devoted to recent advances in drones and their new applications.
Our aim is for this webinar to be valuable to all drones’ users: from researchers and applied scientists to commercial users who are interested in recent developments. Thus, we have invited experts in different research fields related to drones to present the state-of-the-art findings, and applications and provide insights into the future of drone technology.

Meet Our Speakers
Prof. Dr. Diego González-Aguilera
Cartographic and Land Engineering Department, Higher Polytechnic School of Avila, University of Salamanca, Hornos Caleros, Avila, Spain;
Received a B.Sc. degree in Surveying Engineering and a M.Sc. degree in Geodesy and Cartography Engineering from Salamanca University, Spain, in 1999 and 2001, respectively. He was a Research Assistant at INRIA, Grenoble, France, in the Institute of Computer Vision and Robotics, where he also performed his Ph.D. research on 3D reconstruction from a single view, graduating in 2005. He has authored over 300 research articles in international journals and conference proceedings. Co-inventor of 11 patents and 32 intellectual properties (software). Based on his PhD results, he has received 9 international awards from the International Societies of Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing (ISPRS/ASPRS). In 2005, he founded the research group TIDOP (https://tidop.usal.es) (Geotechnologies for the 3D digitization and modelling of complex objects) at the University of Salamanca. He is Full Professor and Head of the Geotechnologies Master and PhD Program at the University of Salamanca, co-founder and CEO of the start-up ITOS3D (Image TO Smart 3D). In 2015 the Royal Academy of Engineering recognised his efforts and work in the field of engineering and in particular in the democratization of photogrammetry. In 2020, the ISPRS recognized his special, personal and meritorious contributions in the field of photogrammetry, being the second Spanish to get this award from its origin in 1996.
Dr. Pablo Rodríguez-Gonzálvez
Department of Mining Technology, Topography and Structures, University of León, Avda. Astorga, Ponferrada, Spain;
Pablo Rodríguez Gonzálvez, surveyor (2004), geodesist and cartographer (2006) and PhD in photogrammetry (2011), worked 8 years at the university of Salamanca, and joined the university of León in 2017, is currently associate professor in the department of mining technology, topography and structures, and coordinator of the DRACONES research group. He has authored over 120 research articles in international journals and conference proceedings, all related to the transversal application of different Geomatics techniques. He has been the main researcher of 8 technological contracts, the majority associated with the University-Business Knowledge Transfer related to the application of Geomatics to different disciplines. Due to his activity, he holds 10 national patents and 20 intellectual properties. His main research lines include photogrammetry 3D reconstruction, accuracy assessment, and radiometric and geometric calibration of the different geomatic sensors. Finally, he is member of the National management committee of COST Action CA16219 “Harmonization of UAS techniques for agricultural and natural ecosystems monitoring”, and co-editor-in-chief of the journal Drones.

On Thursday, 30 June 2022, MDPI and the Journal Drones organized the 1st Webinar on Drones, entitled " Drones Technologies”. This online seminar was chaired by Prof. Dr. Diego González-Aguilera from the University of Salamanca, Spain, and Dr. Pablo Rodríguez-Gonzálvez from the University of Leon, Spain. The webinar presented complementary views on the vast technologies and development opportunities related to drones.
First, Dr. Antidio Viguria reviewed the latest technology developments that increment the autonomy level of unmanned aerial systems (UAS), which is critical to increasing the safety of the drones’ operations. Next, Dr. Luis Miguel González presented the development of specific payloads for UAS and inspection methodologies for large infrastructures, especially focused on performing nondestructive contact inspections. Finally, Prof. Dr. Dimitrios Skarlatos introduced the use of subaquatic drones in underwater for 3D documentation, the present challenges, and the huge potential for research and development in the field. Their presentations were followed by Q&A sessions moderated by the chais.
