Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning systems account for 50% of a building’s energy consumption particularly in the tropics. A large portion of the energy is consumed by the mechanical vapour compression chillers. In order to reduce the energy demand for air conditioning, efforts have been made to develop energy-efficient cooling systems. For hot and humid climate, lowering air temperature and humidity are both necessary to realize thermal comfort. Therefore, to decouple the latent and sensible heat load of the air is a popular method, as it allows individual control of dehumidification and cooling. This talk focuses on recent research advancements related to air cooling and dehumidification. Several game-changing technologies are presented, namely, dew-point evaporative cooler, membrane dehumidifier, polymer-based superabsorbent, and Metal-Organic Framework (MOF) based Adsorbents. More importantly, these technologies, when combined, have enabled new paradigms for heat and mass transfer and air conditioning, favouring high moisture removal and sustainable cooling. This talk further highlights their most recent developments, thermal performances, and provides key insights on their global energy and sustainability impacts.
