Ana Pereira is a sports scientist with interest in analysing the effect of exercise in different parameters of health with particular focus in design programme trainings for specific ageing groups. Doctor of Sport Sciences at the University of Trás-os-Montes e Alto Douro with work in genetic effect on physical performance. Currently, Ana is a co-coordinator of Sport Degree in Education in the Polytechnic Institute of Setúbal (IPS) and also a represent member of EUDRES in Well Being & Ageing. She is also a researcher in national local research centers (CIEF and CIIAS-IPS), participating in several projects. Research interests include the evaluation and modelling of human performance during ageing process, having published several papers in peer-review journals and books chapters. Is frequently invited to participate as scientific conferences related to “aging and exercise”. These outcomes were achieved in collaboration with several international centers and researchers with national and also international factor.

On Thursday 21 April 2022, MDPI and the International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health organized their first webinar entitled “Physical Exercise and Health in Aging”.

The introduction was held by the Chair of the webinar, Prof. Dr. Ana Pereira from the Department of Science and Technology, School of Education, Polytechnic Institute of Setubal, Portugal. The Chair also kicked off the webinar by talking about whether we are born or we become an old person.

Three talks followed: Prof. Dr. Luis Leitão from the Department of Science and Technology, School of Education, Polytechnic Institute of Setubal, Portugal spoke about the detraining effects on health profiles of older adults, Prof. Dr. Jorge Pinto Soares from the Department of Science of Sport, Exercise and Health, University of Trás-os-Montes and Alto Douro, Portugal discussed the effects of physical exercise in DNA damage in ageing, and lastly Prof. Dr. Pedro Morouço from the School of Education and Social Science, Polytechnic Institute of Leiria, Portugal gave a presentation entitled “Exercise and Aging: It Is Time to Give Significant Steps Towards Customized Programs”.

Depending on lifestyle factors (such as smoking habits and alcohol) and physical activity patterns combined with some physiologic mechanisms it seems that genetic profile is associated with the adaptive processes against hormetic agents, such as exercise and oxidative stress in aging. In this point of view, exercise training seems to have a different response in DNA damage and in DNA repair between different genotypes and polymorphisms. Also we should take into account the detraining period because the residual effects are also different between different genotype groups. In aging besides the genetic profile and exercise training several factors depend in the intuition of the professional to promote the best adaptations and health.

The presentations were followed by a Q&A and a discussion, moderated by the Chair. The webinar was offered via Zoom and required registration to attend.
