Clinical Consequences of Gut Microbiota Dysbiosis: Exploring New Associations

Gut microbiota play a central role in the pathophysiology of the diseases in the gastrointestinal tract and beyond GI tract. Many chronic diseases originate from distorted gut microbiota composition (dysbiosis). The main function of gut microbiota includes regulation of host physiology (regulation of immune system, protection of intestinal barrier, regulation of gut motility and participation in the digestion of food), diverse metabolic functions and regulation of gut-brain barrier. The communication between the gut microbiota and their diverse metabolites and human body systems regulates physiological aspects of health and disease.

COVID-19 infection leads to profound alterations in gut microbiome and affects the gut brain axis leading to irritable bowel syndrome. A number of trials using gut microbiota modulating therapy such as dietary modifications, prebiotics, probiotics and fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT) has already been initiated.

The webinar focuses on the recent development in the understanding of the gut microbial dysbiosis in COVID-19 infection and the pathogenesis of COVID-19 associated irritable bowel syndrome. Further important topic are recent advancements in the pathophysiology and treatment of histamine intolerance. Finally, we will present the new developments in the diagnosing irritable bowel syndrome and other food intolerances.
