6th IJERPH Webinar

Carbon Neutrality and Sustainable Development

Global warming has caused a series of damage to the ecological and anthropogenic environments. Many countries have promised to reduce carbon emissions, with the ultimate goal of reaching carbon neutralization. Additionally, there is a growing realization, at national and international levels, that we should increase carbon sink and reduce carbon emissions from various aspects, such as industry, transportation, agriculture, urban land use, green construction, terrestrial ecosystem carbon, blue carbon, etc. Studies on carbon neutralization have begun to spring up, and although some studies have attempted to examine the potential contribution of a single aspect to carbon neutralization, most have focused on theoretical routes and strategies. There are still many issues that need to be solved and research to be explored.

Dr. Xiaowei Chuai

School of Geography and Ocean Science, Nanjing University, China, Key Laboratory of carbon neutralization and land space optimization, Ministry of natural resources, China;
Associate professor in Nanjing University since 2016. His study mainly focuses on land use/cover change and its effect on ecological environment, especially for the influence on terrestrial ecosystem carbon sink/source. He also examines anthropogenic greenhouse gas emission energy consumption, waste and industrial production process in China. He proposes related land management strategies for local governments to increase carbon sink or reduce carbon emissions, in order for China to reach the goal of carbon neutrality around 2060.

Webinar Content

On Friday, 15 July 2022, MDPI and the International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health organized the 6th webinar on IJERPH, entitled "Carbon Neutrality and Sustainable Development".

The introduction was held by the Chair of the webinar, Dr. Xiaowei Chuai, who is associate professor in Nanjing University since 2016.

The first speaker was Dr. Mengyao Han, from the Institute of Geographic Sciences and Natural Resources Research at the Chinese Academy of Sciences. Her presentation was entitled "Renewable Energy Evolution and Cooperation Towards Low-carbon Transition".

The second presentation was held by Prof. Dr. Rongqin Zhao with his presentation " Carbon Emissions of Urban Water System Based on Water-Energy-Carbon Nexus". He is professor in the school of surveying and geo-informatics in the North China University of water resources and Electric Power.

Dr. Xiaowei Chuai, the chair and third presenter, talked about "Equitable High-Precision Carbon Compensation in China".

He was followed by Mr. Ji-Yong Park with his presentation on the "Estimation of Energy Transition Cost by Regional Types according to Carbon Emission Characteristics". He is a graduate student in Pusan National University since 2017.

The presentations were followed by two panel discussions, held by Dr. Kyung-wan Bae and Dr. Pilju Joo respectively. Dr. Kyung-wan Bae is a researcher in Ulsan Disaster Management Research Center since 2020, while Dr. Pilju Joo is currently studying community-based disaster safety governance.

The presentations were followed by a Q&A and a discussion, moderated by the Chair Dr. Xiaowei Chuai. The webinar was offered via Zoom and required registration to attend.
