Depression, often described as the “silent epidemic” of the 21st century, stands as a complex and pervasive mental health challenge that affects millions of individuals worldwide. While its clinical manifestations are readily observable in the form of persistent sadness, hopelessness, and loss of interest in daily life, the true depths of this condition lie hidden within the intricate web of the human brain. Understanding the molecular basis of depression has become a crucial endeavor in contemporary neuroscience and psychology, as it holds the potential to unravel the mysteries behind this debilitating disorder and, ultimately, pave the way for more effective therapeutic interventions.

Dr. Terézia Kisková-Šimková
Pavol Jozef Safarik University in Kosice, Slovakia;
Dr. Terézia Kisková-Šimková PhD. completed her education in the field of Molecular Biology in 2008. Thereafter she completed her PhD in the field of Animal Physiology in 2012 at the Faculty of Science, UPJŠ, Košice, Slovakia. She experienced a postdoctoral study at the Medical University of Vienna, Austria.
She has more than 45 manuscripts indexed in the Web of Science and SCOPUS and currently holds a Web of Science H-index of 14.
Dr. Terézia Kisková-Šimková is a senior researcher in the field of physiology and works at the Institute of Pathology, Faculty of Medicine, UPJŠ, Slovakia. The research area of her team focuses on experimental neurooncology or other neuro-psychiatry diseases, such as depression. She also focuses on applying synthetic drugs or natural substances, such as secondary plant metabolites, during these diseases. The area of interest of the research team also includes the search for predictive markers in the blood during various neurological diseases.
Dr. Dominika Jarčušková
Pavol Jozef Safarik University in Kosice, Slovakia;
Dr. Dominika Jarčušková PhD. completed her education in the field of General medicine in 2016. Thereafter she completed her PhD in the field of Neurology in 2020 at the Faculty of Medicine, UPJŠ, Košice, Slovakia.
She has more than 14 manuscripts indexed in the Web of Science and SCOPUS and currently holds a Web of Science H-index of 6.
MUDr. Dominika Jarčušková works at the 1st Department of Psychiatry, Faculty of Medicine, UPJŠ, Slovakia. The research area of her team focuses on neuropsychiatry diseases. She also focuses on genetic research in the psychiatry.
Prof. Dr. Ali Saffet Gönül
Ege University, Türkiye;
Prof. Dr. Ali Saffet Gönül received his medical degree from Hacettepe University. He completed his residency training in Psychiatry at Erciyes University. During his residency, he had the opportunity to work with Şahap Erkoç at Bakırköy Mental and Neurological Diseases Hospital and with Canan Başar Eroğlu at University of Bremen on event-related potentials.
Prof. Gönül has authored more than sixty internationally indexed scientific articles and presented over one hundred posters at international congresses. He serves on the editorial board of the Journal of Affective Disorders and acts as a reviewer for numerous national and international scientific journals.
