The research activity is aimed at the development and validation of chromatographic methods for the qualitative and quantitative determination of biologically active molecules in human and animal, cosmetics, food, and environmental complex matrices. These procedures have been applied to different analytes and drugs/drug associations, also finding application in clinical and pre-clinical studies, to characterize new delivery systems of the active principle to improve their pharmacological properties. In the development of the method, predictive models and chemometrics are applied for both the optimization of extraction protocols and for final data processing. Particular attention is given to the innovative and green (micro) extraction techniques and new instrumental configurations for complex matrix quantitative analysis. Scientific activity is proven by more than 320 publications in International peer-reviewed Journals, by 30 book chapters and 10 books, and by more than 220 oral and poster communications at National and International conferences.

Prof. Dr. Rosaria Costa

Rosaria Costa is an Associate Professor of Analytical Chemistry at the BIOMORF Department of the University of Messina (UniME), Italy. From 1998 to 1999, she carried out research activity in the Chemistry Department of Virginia Tech, Blacksburg (USA), where she practiced chromatographic techniques under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Harold M. McNair. From 2003 to 2006, she attended the PhD course in "Production and Safety of Food of Animal Origin", obtaining the PhD title at the University of Sassari (Italy). Financial support for her post-doctoral research during the course of a 4-year research grant was provided by the companies Shimadzu and Supelco/Sigma-Aldrich. From 2011 to 2017, she was a permanent researcher in Analytical Chemistry at the SCIFAR (Pharmaceutical Sciences) Department of UniME. Since 2003, she has been a co-Principal Investigator in numerous research projects and academic spin-offs. For years, she has been very active in the peer review process for highly qualified journals in the fields of analytical, pharmaceutical, environmental, and natural products chemistry. She has published over a hundred peer-reviewed articles, including monographs; she has also contributed about 150 presentations to national and international conferences. She was part of the organizing committee of a number of national and international conferences. She is a co-inventor of a patent for the production of a food film made from industrial fish waste. Her present research interests embrace the fundamentals of gas chromatography and liquid chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry applied to the analysis of natural products, plant matrices, food, and environmental samples, with particular attention to "green" and "sustainable" approaches for recovering resources from wasted material.

Dr. Natalia Manousi

Natalia Manousi is a postdoctoral researcher at the Institute of Chemical Technologies and Analytics of TU WIEN, Austria. She was awarded a Marie Skłodowska-Curie Postdoctoral Fellowships to design a drone-based sampling device for the monitoring of toxic volatile organic compounds caused by forest fires. She received her PhD in Chemistry from the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki in 2022. Her current research interests focus on the development of green and sustainable microextraction methodologies and the development and application of novel metric tools focusing on the evaluation of methods’ practicality and analytical performance. To date, she has published approximately 110 research articles and book chapters, has more than 50 conference contributions and has an h-index of 29.
