Talk: Antimicrobial resistance and One Health, what can we conclude about the past and current status?
Bio: Professor Patrick Butaye is STEM-professor at City University’s Jockey Club College of Veterinary Medicine and Life Sciences. Patrick graduated with a degree of Veterinary Medicine from Ghent University in 1994. In 2000, he obtained his PhD from the same university. Following this, he worked as Senior researcher and head of division at the former Veterinary and Agrochemical Research institute in Brussel until 2015. In 2006, he became Adjunct Professor at Ghent University and still holds that position. In 2015, he started a Professorship at Ross University School of Veterinary Medicine, whereafter in 2023, he started at City University of Hong Kong. He is also senior research fellow at the One Health Research Foundation, Miramar Florida. Patrick is or has been member of several national and international advisory committees and expert panels and has been ad hoc expert on a multitude of occasions. These include the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA), World Health Organization (Who), Pan American Health Organisation (PAHO), Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO), Belgian Food safety authority (FAVV), … He is member of the Executive board of the European Study Group on Veterinary Microbiology (ESGVM), as part of the European Society of Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases (ESCMID). He has been member of several project review panels worldwide. Patrick was in the organising and/or scientific committee of several national and international conferences, including but not limited to ARAE, ICOHAR, ECVM, Belgian Wildlife Disease Society,… Patrick is Editor in Chief of the journal Veterinary Sciences (MDPI), member of the Editorial Board of BMC Veterinary Research and Editor for PlosOne and Associate Editor for Frontiers in Antimicrobials, Resistance and Chemotherapy as well as Guest Editor for Frontiers in Veterinary Science.

Talk: Pork, Pathogens, and Globalization: How Modern Pig Farming Fuels the International Transmission of Salmonella
Bio: Dr. Li Heng is an Associate Professor at the School of Basic Medical Sciences, Soochow University. He earned his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees from the College of Veterinary Medicine at China Agricultural University, followed by a Ph.D. from the Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences at the University of Copenhagen. Dr. Li specializes in the transmission dynamics of pathogenic bacteria, employing an interdisciplinary approach that integrates biomedicine, informatics, and mathematics. His current work centers on the genomic integration and transmission modeling of Staphylococcus aureus and Salmonella, the surveillance and tracing of antimicrobial resistance genes in these pathogens, and the genomic characterization of clinical isolates.

Talk: Genome-scale evolution of canine distemper virus
Bio: Dr. Zsófia lanszki graduated as a biologist from the University of Pécs, Hungary. She is currently an assistant professor at the Institute of Biology, Faculty of Sciences, University of Pécs, and works at the National Laboratory of Virology. Her research focuses on viral pathogens of wildlife, with particular emphasis on carnivores and bats. She investigates the diversity, evolution, molecular epidemiology, and cross-species transmission of animal viruses, including lyssaviruses, paramyxoviruses, coronaviruses, filoviruses, and other high-consequence (BSL-4) pathogens. Her work combines field-deployable molecular diagnostics, on-site genome sequencing using mobile laboratory platforms, bioinformatics, and epidemiological approaches to improve understanding of virus ecology and disease emergence in wildlife. Following the One Health concept, her research explores the interfaces between wildlife, domestic animals, and humans to support surveillance and preparedness for emerging zoonotic diseases.
