In celebration of International Women in Engineering Day 2024 (https://www.inwed.org.uk/), MDPI is launching a special webinar to encourage researchers to come together, take action, and highlight the power and creativity of female engineers and their contributions to the field.

The research and innovations led by female engineers have resulted in groundbreaking advancements across various domains, from developing sustainable technologies and enhancing medical devices to revolutionizing communication systems and improving infrastructure. Their work continues to shape our world and inspire future generations.

Dr. Teresa Donateo

Department of Engineering for Innovation, University of Salento, Italy;
Dr. Teresa Donateo has been an Associate Professor of Fluid Machinery, Energy Systems, and Power Generation at the University of Salento since 2014, teaching courses on Fluid Machinery and Hybrid-Electric Powertrains. She received her master’s degree in Materials Engineering from the Università degli Studi di Lecce in 1999 and her Ph.D. in Combustion and Energy Conversion in 2003 from ISUFI. She joined the Faculty of Engineering at the University of Salento as an assistant professor in 2001 and has been involved in the Quality Assurance processes at the University of Salento since 2018. She was also a member of the Groups of Evaluation Experts (GEV) in the Italian Evaluation of Research Quality 2015–2019 (VQR). She has been collaborating since 2005 with the Ohio State University, Columbus, OH, since 2019 with the University of Brest, Brest, France, and since 2001 with major automotive and aircraft industrial partners. She is the author of more than 100 papers on the simulation, design, and optimization of internal combustion engines, fuel cells, and electric and hybrid-electric powertrains for aircraft, heavy-duty vehicles, and passenger cars.

Dr. Rossana Madrid

Media and Interfaces Laboratory (LAMEIN), Bioengineering Department, Exact Science and Technology Faculty, National University of Tucuman, Argentina, Higher Institute for Biological Research (INSIBIO), National Research Council (CONICET), Argentina;
Rossana Madrid is EE and Ph.D. in Bioengineering. She is currently a Full Professor of Biomedical Transducers and Biosensors and Microsystems in the Biomedical Engineering Program, and also at a Doctoral degree, from the Faculty of Exact Sciences and Technology at the University of Tucumán, Argentina. She is Principal Researcher at the National Council of Scientific and Technical Research of Argentina (CONICET) and she leads the Biosensors and Microsystems group. She has published R&D papers in national and international journals, four book chapters, and has developed four patents. She leads research grants and international cooperation grants with German Universities. Her main research fields include sensors and biosensors, microfluidic systems, and paper-based POC devices for biomedical and environmental applications.

Dr. Yan Wang

University of Brighton , United Kingdom;
Dr. Wang’ research direction is remanufacturing which adds value to the waste stream by returning them to working order with case studies on automotive, machine tools, rolling stock, office equipment etc. She has published 80+ journal papers as a co-author and has been granted 10 patents as a co-inventor. Her research is funded by EPSRC, Innovate UK and British councils all in close partnership with industry. She chairs the BSI standards T/P/1/7/3 standards which oversee the standards for value retain processes at BSI. She also chaired the International Conferences on Remanufacturing (ICoR2021 and ICoR2023) in partnership with ReMaTec, the world's's leading remanufacturing exhibitions. She is a funding member of the EPSRC sustainable manufacturing hub and leads the South East spoke of the hub. She is an initiator and a member of the China-UK Remanufacturing Standard Working group who is working toward joint ISO remanufacturing standards. Dr. Yan Wang has rich experiences in engagement with policy makers in remanufacturing, including G7, Innovate UK and the Chinese government. e.g. her engagement with policymakers in China and the UK has been listed as one of the policy outcomes of 9th UK-China economic and financial dialogue (Item 57).

Dr. Chiara Giulia Fontanella

Department of Industrial Engineering, Centre for Mechanics of Biological Materials, University of Padova, Italy;
Chiara Giulia Fontanella is an Associate Professor at the Department of Industrial Engineering, University of Padova (Italy). The mission of her research activities pertains to the investigation of the mechanical functionality of biological tissues and structures and the optimization of surgical procedures, biomedical devices and sports equipment. Activities are defined considering the actual clinical and surgical demand and the partnership with industries operating in the biomedical field and the sports system. A unique research approach is followed, where in silico mathematical modelling, in vitro biomechanical experimentations on human and animal tissues and structures, and in vivo animal models are synergistically integrated to rationally design and validate novel procedures and devices.
