JCM Webinar | Etiology and Management of Idiopathic/Progressive Condylar Resorption

Idiopathic/progressive condylar resorption (ICR/PCR) is a rare but crucial disease in the temporomandibular joint (TMJ). Once the breakdown of the joint starts, ICR/PCR can be crippling, leading to severe dentofacial morphological deformity. Therefore, early diagnosis and management of the skeletal changes may help to avoid the outcome of deleterious skeletal change and an unsalvageable TMJ. Thus, as ICR/PCR exhibits mild to severe condylar resorption, management options can range from noninvasive therapy to minimally invasive and invasive surgery, according to its severity.

Regardless of the severity, management goals include restored mandibular function, pain reduction, and improved dentofacial esthetics. In this webinar, international experts present the current status of the ICR/PCR management options, especially noninvasive and invasive modalities. It is anticipated that this webinar will provide an insight into ICR/PCR management.

Prof. Dr. Kotaro Tanimoto

Prof. Dr. Kotaro Tanimoto

Hiroshima University Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences, Japan;
Prof. Dr. Kotaro Tanimoto is a professor in the Department of Orthodontics and Craniofacial and Developmental Biology, Hiroshima University, Graduate School of Biomedical and Health Sciences, Japan. He graduated from Hiroshima University Faculty of Dentistry in 1992. He obtained the orthodontic specialist certification in 2000 and a Ph.D. in 2001. He took up his current post in 2013. His research interest has been the pathology of temporomandibular joint disorders and the regeneration of bone and cartilage. He is the author of over 191 articles in peer-reviewed journals.

Prof. Dr. Louis Mercuri

Prof. Dr. Louis G. Mercuri is a Cum Laude graduate of Georgetown University School of Dentistry, Washington, DC. He received his Certification and Master of Science degree in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery from the University of Illinois Chicago Medical Center. Dr. Mercuri is a Life Member of the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons, a Retired Diplomate of the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons, and the recipient of the 2009 Oral and Maxillofacial Foundation Research Recognition Award and the 2010 William J. Gies Foundation Distinguished Achievement Award in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. In 2011, he was awarded an Honorary Fellowship in the Royal College of Surgeons of England in the Faculty of Dental Surgery. In 2020, the American Society of TMJ Surgeons created the Louis G. Mercuri Lifetime Achievement Award, for which he was the inaugural recipient. Dr. Mercuri has published over 150 papers in peer-reviewed journals and 50 book chapters, and has authored 2 books related to alloplastic TMJ replacement. He has given over 500 invited presentations at both national and international meetings. Dr. Mercuri is presently a Visiting Professor in the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at Rush University Medical Center, Chicago, Adjunct Professor in the Department of Biomedical Engineering at the University of Illinois, Chicago, President of the UIC Institute of Biomaterials, Tribocorrosion, Nano and Regenerative Medicine, and a Clinical Consultant for Stryker/TMJ Concepts, Ventura, CA.

Once condylar resorption begins, stopping its progression is very difficult and sometimes impossible. This webinar seminar presented its etiology, diagnosis and management in detail. Understanding its etiology, diagnosis and management enables early detection and intervention for condylar resorption."
