Hello to all of our colleagues internationally who have come online to join us for this fascinating webinar, focusing on the current state of the art in breast reconstructive surgery.
This webinar has been brought together by the Journal of Clinical Medicine, which encompasses a range of clinical specialties and disciplines, bridging the gap between the different areas of clinical medicine.
The Journal of Clinical Medicine encompasses the affiliated societies of the International Bone Research Association (IBRA), the Italian Resuscitation Council (IRC), the Spanish Society of Hematology and Hemotherapy (SEHH), the Japan Association for Clinical Engineers (JACE), the European Independent Foundation in Angiology/Vascular Medicine (VAS), and others.
Today, we are focusing on breast reconstruction. Breast reconstructive surgery is an important procedure for women who have undergone mastectomy due to breast cancer or other medical conditions. It helps restore a sense of wholeness and femininity, improving the psychological well-being and quality of life of patients. The surgery can help boost self-confidence and body image, allowing women to feel more comfortable in their own skin. Additionally, breast reconstructive surgery can help patients achieve symmetry and balance in their appearance, which can have a positive impact on their overall physical and emotional health. It is a personal decision that should be made in consultation with healthcare providers to ensure the best outcome for each individual.
To touch on some of the modern advances in breast reconstructive surgery, some key advancements in the field include:
- Improved surgical techniques: Advancements in surgical techniques, such as the use of microsurgery and flap procedures, have allowed for more precise and natural-looking results.
- Autologous tissue reconstruction: This technique uses the patient's own tissue from other parts of the body to reconstruct the breast, leading to more natural results and reduced risk of implant-related complications.
- Preoperative planning and imaging: Advanced imaging technology, such as 3D imaging and virtual reality, allows surgeons to better plan the reconstructive process and customize treatment for each patient.
- Oncoplastic surgery: This approach combines cancer surgery with reconstructive techniques to achieve optimal cosmetic outcomes while ensuring complete cancer removal.
- Nipple-sparing mastectomy: This technique preserves the nipple and areola during mastectomy, allowing for more natural-looking results and improved aesthetic outcomes.
- Fat grafting: Fat grafting techniques involve transferring fat from one part of the body to the breast area to improve contour and symmetry, offering a minimally invasive option for reconstruction.
- Targeted therapies and personalized medicine: Advances in targeted therapies and personalized medicine have improved patient outcomes and reduced the risk of complications in breast reconstructive surgery.
Today, we have three invited speakers, who are all at the forefront of this field and will present some fascinating talks that encompass such advances.

Dr. Ishith Seth
Department of Plastic Reconstructive & Hand Surgery, Peninsula Health, Australia;
Dr. Ishith Seth is a senior Plastic Surgery Resident and an honorary senior researcher at Murdoch Children’s Research Institute, The Royal Children's Hospital, and The University of Melbourne. He also serves as a Clinical Tutor at Monash University. He has over 100 peer-reviewed publications, present his work at national and international forums. He is currently editorial board member of Journal of Clinical Medicine, Gland Surgery, AME Surgical Journal, Annals of Joint, and Precision Surgery and resident ambassador for PRS Global Open Journal.
Dr. Peter Henderson
Department of Surgery, Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, USA;
Peter Henderson, MD, MBA, FACS is an Associate Professor of Surgery and Director of Research (Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery) at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai in New York, NY, USA. Dr. Henderson received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Harvard University, a medical degree from Weill Cornell Medical College, and a Master’s of Business Administration degree from the Stern School of Business at New York University. He completed his general surgery and plastic surgery residencies at NewYork-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medical Center, and then completed a fellowship in reconstructive microsurgery at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center. In addition, he has previously servied as the Chief Research Fellow in the Laboratory for Bioregenerative Medicine and Surgery. He has authored or co-authored more than 80 peer-reviewed publications and textbook chapters and more than 110 research abstracts, was an author of a James Barrett Brown Award-winning paper, and has lectured both nationally and internationally.
Dr. Oscar J. Manrique
Syracuse Plastic Surgery, Syracuse, USA;
Oscar J. Manrique M.D., CPE, F.A.C.S., is a Board Certified Plastic Surgeon and Fellow of The American College of Surgeons at Syracuse Plastic Surgery in Syracuse NY.
He did his clinical training in General Surgery and Trauma/Surgical Critical Care at the Massachusetts General Hospital/Harvard Medical School and Boston Medical Center/Boston University, followed by Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery at Montefiore Medical Center/Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York and subsequently by Fellowships in Microsurgery/Lymphatic Surgery at the University of Southern-California in Los Angeles and China Medical University Hospital in Taiwan.
Has published over 200-peer review articles, more than a dozen of book chapters, serves as reviewer for several journals in Plastic Surgery and holds several leadership position at the American Society of Plastic Surgeons. He has special clinical expertise and interest in Gender Affirming Surgery, Microsurgery, Breast Reconstruction and Lymphatic Surgery.
