We invite you to contribute to this Special Issue dedicated to exploring the latest innovations in silicon solar-cell technology. As the world embraces sustainable energy solutions, silicon-based solar cells stand as pillars of reliability and scalability, offering promising avenues for harnessing solar energy.

Throughout this Special Issue, we aim to uncover a plethora of topics, from the enhancement of ingots and wafers to the exploration of advanced cell architectures such as silicon heterojunctions (SHJs) and Tunnel Oxide Passivated Contact (TOPCon). We seek to delve into the intricacies of defect engineering, impurity gettering, and long-term performance reliability, all crucial elements in optimizing the efficiency and durability of silicon solar cells.

Moreover, we eagerly anticipate contributions relating to the burgeoning field of tandem solar cells, where perovskite materials are integrated with silicon to unlock unprecedented potential efficiency. Ms. Anika Gassner

Ms. Anika Gassner

OFI, Austrian Research Institute for Chemistry and Technology, Vienna, Austria;
Ms. Anika Gassner studied Technical Physics with a focus on energy technology at TU Wien and started to work on PV and backsheet repair within her master thesis, which she did at OFI. Since 2023, she has been pursing her PhD at OFI in collaboration with TU Wien on the topic of sustainability of PV, focusing on recycling, repair, and reliability of PV modules. From 2024, she have been participating in the IEA PVPS Task 12 (PV Sustainability Activities).

Dr. Jana-Isabelle Polzin

Dr. Jana-Isabelle Polzin

Fraunhofer Institute for Solar Energy Systems ISE, Freiburg, Germany;
Dr. Jana-Isabelle Polzin studied physics and received her M.Sc. from Goethe University Frankfurt, Germany. In 2017, she joined Fraunhofer Institute for Solar Energy Systems ISE and Albert-Ludwigs-University of Freiburg where she received a PhD in Engineering in 2022. She has since worked as a research fellow in the Silicon PV department at ISE. Her research interest includes the advanced development of poly-Si based passivating contacts (TOPCon) for high-efficiency silicon solar cells with focus on interfacial oxides and poly-Si deposition technologies as well as hydrogenation processes.

Dr. Heping Shen

Dr. Heping Shen

College of Engineering, Computing and Cybernetics, Australian National University, Australia;
Dr. Shen has an unwavering passion and aspiration to create affordable, reliable, and accessible clean electricity technologies to benefit societies worldwide, which has steered her career path. Shen earned her bachelor’s degree (University Medal) in Material Science and Engineering from Huazhong University of Science and Technology in 2009, and her PhD degree from Tsinghua University in China in 2014. Dr. Shen is currently a senior research fellow and senior lecturer (Assistant Professor, Tenured) at the ANU School of Engineering, leading a team focused on developing the next generation of ultra-low-cost solar cell technologies including perovskite and tandem solar cells. Shen and her team have achieved multiple solar cell efficiency records, developed two patents on tandem solar cell technology, and published 90 publications in top tier journals including Nature, Science and Nature Review Materials. Shen took a leading role in attracting and managing multi-partner, multi-million projects. Her total career research income is over USD 16 million. She collaborates extensively with leading photovoltaics manufacturing companies, including Jinko Solar and Risen Energy, to advance the commercialization of next-generation solar cell technologies.

This webinar, part of the special issue entitled "Innovations in Silicon-Based Solar Cells" for the Materials journal published by MDPI, was opened by Dr. Mohamed M. Shehata and closed by Dr. Rabin Basnet.

Ms. Anika Gassner presented on "Repair Possibilities for PV Modules with Cracked Backsheets," followed by Dr. Heping Shen's talk on "High-Efficiency, Stable Perovskite/Silicon Tandem Solar Cells," and Dr. Jana-Isabelle Polzin's presentation on "Preparation of Poly-Si Based Passivating Contacts for TOPCon Solar Cells."

The session concluded with a Q&A segment, providing a comprehensive exploration of advances and repair strategies in photovoltaic technology.
