Dr. Thomas Webster
Department of Biomedical Engineering and Health Sciences, Hebei University of Technology, Tianjin, China;
Thomas J. Webster’s (H index: 111; Google Scholar) degrees are in chemical engineering from the University of Pittsburgh (B.S., 1995; USA) and in biomedical engineering from RPI (Ph.D., 2000; USA). He has served as a professor at Purdue (2000-2005), Brown (2005-2012), and Northeastern (2012-2021; serving as Chemical Engineering Department Chair from 2012 - 2019) Universities and has formed over a dozen companies who have numerous FDA approved medical products currently improving human health. Dr. Webster has numerous awards including: World Top 2% Scientist by Citations (PLOS); SCOPUS Highly Cited Research (Top 1% Materials Science and Mixed Fields); Clarivate Top 0.1% Most Influential Researchers (Pharmacology and Toxicology); and is a fellow of over 8 societies.
On Monday, 19 September 2022, MDPI and the Journal Materials organized the 9th Webinar of the Materials webinar series, entitled "Nanomaterials Saving the Environment: World Researchers Coming Together”. This online seminar was chaired by Dr. Thomas Webster from Hebei University of Technology, Tianjin, China and saw top researchers from all over the world discuss current problems in the environment and how nanomaterials are improving alternative energy, medicine, and other industries.
Profs. Webster, Garcia-Martin, Ghosh, Guisbiers, and Anwar introduced new environmentally friendly ways to make nanomaterials not relying on toxic catalysts or chemicals and new nanomaterials that can harvest solar, wind, and other forms of alternative energy with less of an environmental footprint. The webinar ended with a thought-provoking discussion on why the field of biomaterials has been so slow to embrace the use of environmentally friendly materials, encouraging everyone to push the medical device industry, as well as companies that supply in vitro testing systems, to make green nanotechnologies more available.
