Endometriosis is an estrogen-dependent disease that is characterized by the presence of endometriotic tissue outside the uterine cavity. It causes pain symptoms (such as dysmenorrhea, deep dyspareunia, and chronic pelvic pain) and infertility. The gynecological examination may allow us to suspect the presence of this disease; however, it does not allow us to provide a diagnosis.
This webinar aims to provide an update on using transvaginal ultrasonography to diagnose endometriosis. Transvaginal ultrasonography is currently the first-line investigation for the diagnosis of endometriosis. Compared with other imaging techniques, transvaginal ultrasonography has the advantage of having good diagnostic performance. It is frequently performed by gynecologists who usually manage patients for whom there is a suspicion of endometriosis, and it is cheap. Furthermore, nowadays, standardized protocols are available for assessing the pelvis of patients with a suspicion of endometriosis using ultrasound.

Dr. Stefano Guerriero
Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, University of Cagliari, Policlinico Universitario Duilio Casula, Monserrato, Italy;
Dr. Stefano Guerriero is a Full Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of Cagliari, Italy, a position he has held since 2016. He graduated in Medicine from the University of Pisa, Italy, in 1988 and completed his residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology at the same university in 1992. He served as an Associate Professor in Obstetrics and Gynecology at Cagliari University from 2006 to 2016 and as an Assistant Professor from 1999 to 2006. Dr. Guerriero has authored more than 217 scientific publications in peer-reviewed journals listed by MEDLINE; his h-index is 44. Since 2006, he has been actively involved in the IOTA (International Ovarian Tumor Analysis) group, as well as in the IETA (International Endometrial Tumor Analysis) and MUSA (Morphological Uterus Sonographic Assessment) groups, all three internationally recognized for the quality of their published studies. He is a member of the steering committee of the IDEA (International Deep Endometriosis Analysis) group and has served as the Editor of Ultrasound in Obstetrics and Gynecology since 2011. Dr. Guerriero is a founding member of the International Society of Ultrasound in Obstetrics and Gynecology (ISUOG) and has been invited to participate in the faculty of several ISUOG congresses and other congresses worldwide.

Dr. Melissa Marien
Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Division of Minimally Invasive Gynecology, McMaster University, Hamilton, Ontario, Canada;
Dr. Melissa Marien is a Senior Fellow in Advanced Gynecologic Surgery and Ultrasound at McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada. She graduated in Medicine from the University of Montreal (Quebec), Canada, in 2017 and completed her residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology at Laval University (Quebec), Canada. She is training under Dr Mathew Leonardi at Hamilton Health Sciences, McMaster University Hospital Centre. She is a Second Year Fellow in Advanced Gynecologic Surgery and Gynecologic Ultrasound. She is in her early research career and has seven publications listed on MEDLINE, with many publications in the work, including a review on Imaging Diagnosis of Adenomyosis and an International Delphi Process to develop a reporting tool on ultrasound and MRI when imaging endometriosis. She has presented her work so far at CANSAGE and ISUOG conferences. She also presented at the Marathon for Solidarity virtual conference on Ultrasound of Pelvic Anatomy in Nov 2022 and won the Best Video on Identification and Assessment of Urinary Tract Endometriosis on Ultrasound.

Dr. Szabò Gabor
Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Faculty of Medicine, Semmelweis University, Baross utca 27, Budapest, Hungary;
Dr Gábor Szabó is an Obstetrician and Gynecologist at Semmelweis University, Budapest, Hungary. He finished his Ph.D. in 2013 and worked as an Expert Sonologist and a minimally invasive Gynecological Surgeon. His clinical and scientific interests include ultrasound in endometriosis, gynecologic oncological diseases, and preeclampsia. He has published numerous articles in these fields and won awards for his presentations on Ultrasound and Endometriosis at IOTA in 2019 and 2023. He is a member of the HSUOG (Hungarian Society of Ultrasound in Obstetrics and Gynecology), ISUOG (International Society of Ultrasound in Obstetrics and Gynecology), and Secretary of the MMMT (Hungarian Society of Fetal Medicine). He holds a position on the ISUOG Education Committee Online Education Task Force.

Dr. Fabio Barra
Unit of Obstetrics and Gynecology, "Ospedale del Tigullio," ASL4, Metropolitan Area of Genoa, Genoa, Italy;
Dr. Fabio Barra is a Specialist Doctor in Gynecology and Obstetrics who works at the ASL4, Liguria (Metropolitan Area of Genoa, Genoa, Italy), responsible for the outpatient activity "Chronic pelvic pain and Endometriosis" and a Doctoral Student at the University of Genoa under the supervision of Prof. Simone Ferrero (University of Genoa, Italy). He performed a Surgical Fellowship at the International School of Surgical Anatomy, U.O.C of Obstetrics and Gynecology, IRCCS Sacro Cuore Hospital, Don Calabria (Director Prof. Marcello Ceccaroni). He completed the course in Biomedical Sciences at the Higher School of the University of Genoa (IANUA-ISSUGE) in 2017. Dr. Barra has published over 200 scientific articles and has made over 70 presentations at national and international conferences. The main topics of his research activity are endometriosis and uterine fibroids.
