
Three-dimensional (3D) measurement has become a critical element of our everyday lives, whether we think of it or not. Whenever we travel, for example, we ask about journey times or where to find the nearest supermarket. To answer those questions, we need to have a 3D model of the space we live in. Closer to home, for example, you cannot fit a new kitchen without measuring the three-dimensional space you have available.
The 3D Metrology Conference (3DMC—www.3dmc.events) brings together researchers and users interested in 3D metrology, the high-accuracy end of 3D measurement. This is a necessity at many different scales and, hence, many different accuracy levels. If you build a tunnel starting at both ends, you expect the two parts to meet within millimeters. If you build an aircraft wing in one part of Europe and expect it to fit to the fuselage constructed in another European country, you will have only fractions of a millimeter to spare.
Our speakers today have all presented before at the 3DMC and will be present again at this year’s event in Aachen in September. They will be telling us about their current 3DM technologies and the progress they are making with these. Ahmed Chekh and Unai Mutilba will talk about their work at the Spanish Basque company Tekniker, where they work on the calibration of machine tools and robotic systems which manufacture the parts which must fit together into working devices. Max Hödel, an engineer at BMW and research student at the Technical University of Munich, will tell us about a novel deflectometry system for validating the surface form of car-body components. Russ Coggrave from Loughborough University will talk about high-speed surface scanning for dynamic scene capture. Finally, Scott Ackerson and Brandon Angelini from the US company Quidient will tell us more about their developing technologies in Generalized Scene Reconstruction. Their software tools, which are very versatile measurement tools installed on smart phones, can model your home or measure the damage if your car is trapped in a hailstorm.
