Advances in Bioanalysis: Recent Approaches in the Determination of Biomarkers, Drugs of Abuse and Medicines
Analytical tools to determine drugs, drugs of abuse or biomarkers, either to assess human exposure to those substances or to diagnose diseases, are mandatory for every laboratory working in the bioanalytical field. The development of highly sensitive analytical technology (e.g., time of flight and high-resolution or Orbitrap mass spectrometers) has allowed us to widen the scope of the applications of such techniques to other areas—for instance, the development of new therapeutic agents and industry.
This progress concerning instrumentation was accompanied by important achievements related to sample preparation approaches, trending in low-sample, low-cost, and low-organic solvent procedures without compromising sensitivity and allowing for the analysis of alternative samples, such as exhaled breath, hair, oral fluid, or sweat.
Renowned scientists of the area will present interesting applications of these technologies in this webinar.

Dr. Mário Barroso
National Institute of Legal Medicine and Forensic Sciences, Portugal;
Mário Barroso is a specialist in forensic medicine and works at the National Institute of Legal Medicine and Forensic Sciences (Portugal). PharmD (University of Coimbra, 1999), Postgraduation in Forensic Toxicology (University of Coimbra, 2002), MsC (University of Coimbra, 2005), PhD in Toxicology (University of Beira Interior, 2010). Current interests: drugs and drug abuse; sample preparation; chromatographic analysis; analytical, clinical and forensic toxicology; hair analysis; accreditation and quality control issues; alternative specimens; establishment of cut-off values. He has published over 83 papers in scientific journals, including book chapters, 170 communications and 1 international patent.
On Tuesday, 27 July 2021, MDPI and the Journal Molecules organized the 14th webinar on Molecules, entitled "Advances on Bioanalysis: Recent Approaches in the Determination of Biomarkers, Drugs of Abuse and Medicines".
The introduction was held by the Chair of the webinar, Dr. Mário Barroso. He is a specialist in forensic medicine and works at the National Institute of Legal Medicine and Forensic Sciences in Portugal. He got his master degree at the University of Coimbra, and a PhD in Toxicology at the University of Beira Interior. Among his current interest there are drug abuse; sample preparation; chromatographic analysis; analytical, clinical and forensic toxicology; and hair analysis. He has published over 83 papers in scientific journals, including book chapters.
The first speaker to quick off this webinar was Prof. Dr. Mário Barroso, with his presentation “Applications of Microextraction by Packed Sorbent in Forensic Toxicology”.
The second presentation with the title “Validation and Quality Control for Metabolomics Analysis” was held by Prof. Dr. Georgios Theodoridis. He is Professor of Analytical Chemistry at the Department of Chemistry, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki in Greece. He studied Chemistry and received his PhD in Separations Sciences from the Aristotle University. He then worked as a post-doctorate researcher at the Universities of Pardubice (CZ) and Leiden (NL), in AstraZeneca UK DMPK and as team leader at the Edmund Mach Foundation, Trento Italy. His research focuses on the application of LC-MS and GC-MS in metabolite profiling of nutritional metabolomics and foodomics.
The presentations were followed by a Q&A and a discussion, moderated by the Chair Dr. Mário Barroso. The webinar was offered via Zoom and required registration to attend.
