27th Molecules Webinar

Electrochemical Sensors and Biosensors

Dear Colleagues,

In the past few years, there has been a great and successful effort made when it comes to developing novel electrochemical sensors and biosensors for targeting a plethora of different analytes. The use of nanomaterials associated with other inter- and intra-disciplinary strategies has been enabling the advanced performance of the sensors and biosensors in terms of sensitivity, selectivity, detection limit, response time, and multiplexing capability. Moreover, the integration of the (bio)sensing devices into electronics-based platforms has also been yielding powerful portable and cost-effective (bio)sensing devices for in loco screening.

Therefore, the goal of the webinar “Electrochemical Sensors and Biosensors” is to share experiences and promote debate on new challenges and opportunities regarding the development and application of reliable and fit-for-purpose electrochemical sensors and biosensors.

You are all encouraged to participate!

On Friday, 10 December 2021, MDPI and the Journal Molecules organized the 27th webinar on Molecules, entitled "Electrochemical Sensors and Biosensors".

The introduction was held by the Chair of the webinar, Prof. Dr. Simone Morais. She has a PhD in Chemical Engineering from the Faculty of Engineering at the University of Porto, Portugal. She is an Associate Professor at the Department of Chemical Engineering, School of Engineering of the Polytechnic of Porto. She develops her research activity at the Associated Laboratory for Green Chemistry of the Network of Chemistry and Technology (REQUIMTE), in the fields of Environmental and Analytical Sciences, (Bio)Sensors and Application of Functional Nanostructured Materials.

The first speaker to quick off this webinar was Prof. Dr. Christopher Brett with his presentation "Recent Trends in Electrochemical Sensors and Biosensors". He is a Professor of Chemistry at the University of Coimbra, Portugal, and is President of the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC) 2020–21. After his MA and DPhil in Electrochemistry at the University of Oxford, he spent a year at British Petroleum, London, before moving to Coimbra. His research interests are related to the development of new materials in electrochemistry and their application in different areas, particularly in sensing.

The second presentation was held by Dr. Alina Vasilescu, with her presentation "Overcoming the Selectivity Challenges in the Application of Electrochemical Enzyme Biosensors". She received her PhD in Analytical Chemistry from University of Bucharest, Romania and University of Perpignan, France. After a postdoc at the University of Toronto, Canada, she joined the International Centre of Biodynamics in Bucharest, Romania, where she currently works as a researcher. Her research activity is centered on the development of biosensors for practical applications.

Each presentation was followed by a Q&A and a discussion, moderated by the Chair Prof. Dr. Simone Morais. The webinar was offered via Zoom and required registration to attend. The full recording can be found here on Sciforum website.
