Radar and its Applicability as an NDT Device

Radar techniques are by definition non-destructive methodologies, since microwaves do not modify any characteristic of the medium they propagate through or are reflected by (at least, at regulated power at permitted levels). Ground-Penetrating Radar and Ground-Based Interferometric Monitoring Radar are two typologies of systems widely used as NDT devices. The basic working principles and architectures of both systems’ typologies are presented; then, specific applications are reported together with achievable performance and some relevant use cases. Finally, the current main limitations and potential future technology developments are discussed.

In this webinar, Dr Alessandro Simi will provide insights into radar technology and its applicability as a non-destructive testing tool.

Dr. Alessandro Simi

Dr. Alessandro Simi

IDS GeoRadar, Pisa, Italy;
Dr. Alessandro Simi is the Director of the R&D department at IDS GeoRadar (a part of Hexagon group), an industry operating in the field of radar systems for civil engineering, geophysical and geotechnical applications. In IDS GeoRadar he is leading a team of tens of electronical, mechanical and software engineers that develop, evolve and innovate a large product portfolio, comprising Interferometric Monitoring Radars and Ground Penetrating Radar and their relevant Software solutions. He has almost twenty years of experience specifically on Ground Penetrating Radar, one of the technologies in which IDS GeoRadar is a worldwide leader, he has conceived innovative system architectures as well as data processing algorithms. Between 2008 and today he has authored tens of scientific papers, mainly published by IEEE as Proceedings of the major Conferences concerning GPR as the “International Conference on Ground Penetrating Radar” and the “International Workshop on Advanced Ground Penetrating Radar”. He is the inventor of published patents concerning both methods and novel apparatus for Ground Penetrating Radar and its applications.

The third webinar on NDT, titled "Radar and its Applicability as an NDT Device," took place on December 11, 2024. The speaker, Dr. Alessandro Simi from IDS GeoRadar (part of the Hexagon group), Italy, delivered an insightful presentation. The session was chaired by Professor Fabio Tosti from the Faringdon Research Centre at the University of West London, UK. Dr. Simi discussed the theories, operating principles, and primary applications of two widely used Radar systems in NDT: Ground-Penetrating Radar (GPR) and Ground-Based Interferometric Radar (GBIR). He also highlighted key limitations and potential areas for future advancements. The webinar attracted a large audience and featured several technical questions from attendees.
