Welcome from
the chair

The transition toward Industry 4.0 in civil infrastructure demands a shift from retrospective sampling to proactive, real-time monitoring. To address the spatial gaps and delayed feedback of traditional asphalt quality checks, high-frequency sensing must be integrated directly into the construction workflow.

In this webinar, Dr. Siqi Wang will present a GPR-based intelligent compaction automation system for real-time pavement quality monitoring. By integrating ground-penetrating radar (GPR) with GPS-RTK positioning, the system enables continuous dielectric constant measurements and the high-resolution thermal mapping of the compaction status during asphalt paving. Key innovations include: (1) vibration-resistant GPR mounting designs that improve signal stability under field construction conditions; (2) a timestamp–path interpolation synchronization algorithm that achieves a cm-level spatial mapping accuracy; and (3) a surface reflection calibration methodology that compensates for water film interference and vibration-induced measurement errors.

The developed platform implements automated Alpha-Shape spatial mapping and time-series compaction pattern recognition algorithms, generating intuitive thermal maps of density and temperature fields at a 5cm resolution. Field validations demonstrated system robustness with PWL values of 96.4-97.4, effectively guiding real-time compaction adjustments. This technology provides a novel solution for continuous quality control in smart pavement construction, significantly enhancing construction efficiency and quality consistency through immediate data-driven feedback. This system has been successfully applied in multiple large-scale infrastructure projects, marking a critical advancement in non-destructive testing for intelligent civil engineering applications.

This session will provide insight into the engineering strategies required to ensure data accuracy in dynamic construction environments and will explore how advanced algorithms can transform raw GPR signals into reliable tools for real-time quality management.
