
This webinar is part of the MDPI journal initiative Women’s Special Issue Series: Worldwide Advances in Non-Coding RNA Research born with the intent to promote and support the contributions of women in research. The main goal of this webinar is to showcase the scientific achievements of women across different areas of non-coding RNA research.
Non-coding RNAs are key regulators of gene expression and play pivotal roles in diverse biological processes as well as in the development of many diseases. Some of them are well known and studied but others are still mainly unknown for their role in normal physiology and in association with diseases. Here we hosted the work of two researchers who will cover two aspects of non-coding RNA research.

She is a Senior Researcher at the Genetic and Molecular Epidemiology research unit. Expertise: analyses of the microbiome with different techniques and from various biological samples; analyses of the role of small non-coding RNAs as biomarkers for early diagnosis and monitoring of specific cancers with a non-invasive approach; functional analyses of non-coding RNAs in in vitro systems; DNA repair functional assays; in silico analyses for functionality and target analyses of non-coding RNAs; genetic analyses for susceptibility to diseases. She has published more than 130 peer-reviewed scientific manuscripts in international journals, and two book chapters.

During my scientific career, I investigated tumor progression, focusing on the study of miRNAs involved in melanoma and breast cancer tumor dissemination. On this topic we published various papers showing the relevant roles of miR-214 and miR-148b in melanoma metastasis formation via the regulation of a specific pathway. I generated mouse models for the overexpression of miR-214 in vivo to investigate the therapeutic potential of miR-214. I worked on the development of anti-/pre-miRNA based therapeutic approaches to block and control tumor progression in a specific way targeting tumor cells only by using chimeric aptamers. More recently, I started a new project to highlight the molecular basis of early-onset breast cancer with the final aim to find potential therapeutic targets and biomarkers to improve the management of young breast cancer patients.
