Dietary Fluoride Intake, Metabolism and Health
Dear colleagues,
The upcoming webinar on "Dietary Fluoride Intake, Metabolism and Health" will provide an overview of recent research on fluoride and health, with a special focus on neurodevelopment. This session will discuss current research needs related to fluoride and neurocognition as well as other health outcomes. It will also discuss some late-breaking research underway on fluoride and neurodevelopment in the United States. Additionally, attendees will gain insights into different sources of dietary fluoride intake, as well as fluoride exposure assessment. This webinar is designed for researchers, clinicians, healthcare professionals, and members of the public to help increase their understanding of what is known about potential health effects of fluoride exposure and what remains unclear.

Meet Our Speakers
Dr. Ashley J. Malin

Dr. Ashley J. Malin, Ph.D., is an Epidemiologist and Assistant Professor in the Department of Epidemiology at the University of Florida (UF), as well as a Clinical Psychologist. Her research program examines impacts of environmental toxicants and nutrition on various health outcomes. She is a leading expert in the health effects of fluoride exposure and has published extensively on this topic. She was awarded a K99/R00 grant from the National Institutes of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS) to examine the impacts of early-life fluoride exposure on children’s neurodevelopment and sleep patterns in the United States and Canada. Her recent publication on prenatal fluoride exposure and children’s neurobehavior in Los Angeles, California, was selected as a 2024 paper of the year by the National Institutes of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS). Dr. Malin has also published broadly on nutrition and health. She has disseminated studies on dietary nutrient intake and child neurodevelopment, adult cardiometabolic outcomes and depression and dental caries. At UF, she directs the Fluoride Aluminum Brain and Behavior (FABB) Lab, where she mentors trainees in environmental epidemiology research at various stages of career development.
Dr. Kyla W. Taylor
Division of Translational Toxicology, National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences, National Institutes of Health, Research Triangle Park, North Carolina;
Dr. Kyla W. Taylor, Ph.D., is an epidemiologist in the Integrative Health Assessment Branch at the Division of Translational Toxicology (DTT) at NIEHS. Dr. Taylor specializes in systematic review and hazard identification methodologies and serves as the program lead for the DTT’s Consumer Products and Therapeutics Program. Taylor's research includes conducting systematic reviews and meta-analyses, advancing and harmonizing systematic review and evidence integration methodologies and developing class-based approaches for hazard assessment. Additionally, Taylor leads primary research on exposures to personal care products and their chemical constituents, investigating potential links to hormone-sensitive cancers and other health outcomes.
Taylor received her BA from St. Olaf College in Northfield, Minnesota, her M.S. in Population Health Sciences at the University of Wisconsin–Madison and her Ph.D. in Epidemiology at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill.
Dr. Durdana Khan

Dr. Durdana Khan, Ph.D., is currently a postdoctoral fellow at the FABB lab at the University of Florida. She is trained as a medical physician and earned her MPH in Health Behavior and Health Promotion from The Ohio State University. She then earned her PhD in Health Sciences from York University in Toronto, Canada. Dr. Khan has published studies on the impact of environmental factors on the physical, mental and reproductive health of aging populations, which have received widespread recognition. During her fellowship at UF, she has also published first author studies on urinary fluoride levels among youth in the United States and the systemic role of dietary nutrient intake in dental caries. She has recently completed the first analyses of prenatal fluoride exposure and infant neurodevelopment in the US, as well as prenatal fluoride exposure and autism-like traits in the US.
