Prof. Dr. Raúl Domínguez

Departamento de Motricidad Humana y Rendimiento Deportivo, Faculty of Education Sciences, Universidad de Sevilla, Spain;
Raúl Domínguez is a full professor in the Department of Human Motricity and Sport Performance at the University of Seville. He is a coordinator of the Sport Sciences Degree and leads a research group focused on sport nutrition. Professor Domínguez has managed seven competitive research projects regarding sport supplementation and its effects on the athletic population. He has published 72 articles (with a JCR impact factor), of which 15 focused on beetroot juice or nitrate supplementation. He has been invited to speak on sport nutrition at 14 national or international congresses, and has obtained two awards for studies related to beetroot juice supplementation.

On Friday 23rd September 2022 , MDPI and the Journal Nutirents organized the 7th Webinar on Nutrients entitled New Perspectives about Beetroot Juice Supplementation on Athletic Population”. This online seminar was chaired by Prof. Dr. Raúl Domínguez, who was joined by four esteemed scientists who presented various studies regarding beetroot juice supplementation. In summary they explored NO3--NO2--NO pathway, beetroot juice supplementation could exert ergogenic effect in endurance performance, high intensity and explosive efforts. Effects on some sport modalities, as team sports, requires for studying and adjust new dosages of beetroot juice supplementation. Preliminary results suggest ergogenic effects of beetroot juice supplementation on female athletes. However, the number of studies in females is very low compared to males. Therefore, future studies most to prioritize the recruitment of female participants. Beetroot juice supplementation could be a useful supplementation for enhancing physical performance and healthy parameters in older populations. Older population with cardiovascular disease could be more sensible than healthy older people. Finally, oral health practices, foods and medicines could affect to the oral bacteria and acidotic conditions of stomach with a direct interaction in the conversion of nitrite from nitrate
