Recent Advances in Ocular Pharmacology
We welcome you to this webinar which aims to present novel therapeutic substances and treatment modalities for ocular conditions. The eye’s unique characteristics (barriers, size, sensitivity of tissues and anatomical structures) render this discussion very interesting; at the same time, new substances are being developed to treat conditions that affect the eyesight and the quality of life of millions of patients. We hope that the presentations delivered by academics with extensive research in this field will contribute to the ongoing scientific dialogue in this significant field.

Prof. Antonios Goulas

Prof. Dmitrios Fatouros
School of Pharmacy, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Greece;
Dimitrios Fatouros is a Professor at Aristotle University of Thessaloniki School of Pharmacy. He holds a PhD in Pharmaceutical Technology from the School of Pharmacy at the University of Patras in Greece. He subsequently held posts as a Post-Doctoral fellow at the Leiden/Amsterdam Centre of Drug Delivery (LA/CDR) Research Assistant Professor at the Danish University of Pharmaceutical Sciences and Senior Lecturer at the University of Portsmouth, School of Pharmacy and Biomedical Sciences. His areas of research expertise cover advanced drug delivery systems, nanomedicine and nanotechnology with special focus on additive manufacturing, mucosal delivery, poorly soluble drugs, in vitro digestion models and self-assembling peptides. He has co-authored over 220 peer research articles and book chapters (google Scholar 7703, h index 49).
Dr. Anna Nikolaidou
University of Tübingen, Germany;
Dr. Anna Nikolaidou is a medical doctor and PhD candidate in Experimental Medicine at the University of Tübingen's Institute for Ophthalmic Research. She holds an MD and two MSc degrees in Medical Research Methodology from Aristotle University of Thessaloniki and in Nanomedicine from the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens. Her professional experience includes serving as an ophthalmology resident at Aghia Sophia Children's Hospital in Athens, and previously as a research fellow at the Laboratory of Experimental Ophthalmology at Aristotle University. Dr. Nikolaidou has authored over 10 peer-reviewed publications, focusing on pediatric ophthalmology, technology applications, and the integration of artificial intelligence in eye care. At the University of Tübingen, her PhD project focuses on myopia and the use of electrophysiology on understanding the underlying retinal mechanisms. Her Medical Doctoral project focuses on rehabilitation strategies for children with hemianopia.
Dr. Georgios Stergiopoulos
University Eye Clinic, Greece, University of Ioannina, Greece;
Dr. George Stergiopoulos is a 4th-year Ophthalmology resident at the University Eye Clinic of Ioannina. He received his MD from the University of Ioannina in 2018 and obtained an MSc in Biomedical Research Methodology, Biostatistics and Clinical Bioinformatics from the University of Thessaly in 2023. He is currently pursuing a PhD at the University of Ioannina in collaboration with FORTH-BRI, focusing on developing a humanised in vitro model of the retinal neurovascular unit using stem cell-derived retinal organoids and microfluidics, aiming to study diabetic retinopathy. His research proposal was one of the five selected for presentation at the Young Ophthalmologists' Research Dragons’ Den during the 58th National Ophthalmology Congress in 2025. Dr. Stergiopoulos has experience as a general practitioner in the private sector and has received two awards for oral presentations during his residency. He speaks English and German fluently.
Summary of the recording:
This webinar was an exciting opportunity to learn more about the fascinating pharmacokinetic properties of the eye and cutting-edge research on new treatment modalities for eye conditions affecting millions of people worldwide. As part of an ongoing effort to develop safer and more effective therapies for glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy, macular degeneration and other conditions, esteemed professors and emerging researchers shed light on ocular barriers and novel methods to overcome them.
