Dear Colleagues,

Thank you for joining our webinar. It is our pleasure to host a discussion around a Special Issue on Sensors focused on Multimodal Sensing Technologies for IoT and AI-Enabled Systems from a multidisciplinary perspective.

With discussions about AI and IoT gaining momentum, it is imperative for critical educators, researchers, students, and broader professionals/experts to re-evaluate and rearticulate multiple aspects of the technological capabilities, concerns, and challenges of using AI and IoT sensing. Proper usage, security, and ethical matters of employing such timely tools and services are also brought into the discussion, given that the technological evolution is much faster than the advances in the formation of a solid regulatory framework. Among other things, social and age exclusions in the use of the new capabilities must be minimized so as to reach multiple potential users and audiences with different backgrounds and competencies. Thus, literacy activities and interdisciplinary dissemination, as the current webinar aims, are vital for accomplishing the set targets.

Particularly, it is essential to bring forward technology limits and expectations, emphasizing on challenges in real-time wireless cyber-physical systems, on the use of multimodal content analysis services for the non-technologist that might be encountered in Media professionals and Journalism communities, on automating the cyber-physical things domain via low/no code pipelines that average users can comprehend and employ. Highly impacted researchers are implicated as instructors in this event, aiming at highlighting multiple different but also complementary perspectives. With opportunities for radical social and educational transformation becoming foreclosed, the aim of this Webinar (and the associated Special Issue) is to broaden the scope and space of critical pedagogical discourse and the development of related ideas. Therefore, through this webinar, we will discuss the urgency of this call in more depth and initiate a conversation with potential authors.

Prof. Dr. George K. Karagiannidis

Prof. Dr. George K. Karagiannidis

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Greece;
Dr. George K. Karagiannidis was born in Pithagorion, Samos Island, Greece. He received the University Diploma (5 years) and PhD degree, both in electrical and computer engineering from the University of Patras, in 1987 and 1999, respectively. From 2000 to 2004, he was a Senior Researcher at the Institute for Space Applications and Remote Sensing, National Observatory of Athens, Greece. In June 2004, he joined the faculty of Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Greece where he is currently Professor in the Electrical & Computer Engineering Dept. and Head of Wireless Communications & Information Processing (WCIP) Group. He is also Honorary Professor at South West Jiaotong University, Chengdu, China. His research interests fall in the broad area of Digital Communications Systems and Signal processing, with emphasis on Wireless Communications, Optical Wireless Communications, Wireless Power Transfer and Applications and Communications & Signal Processing for Biomedical Engineering.

Dr. Symeon Papadopoulos

Dr. Symeon Papadopoulos

Centre for Research and Technology Hellas (CERTH), Greece;
Dr. Symeon Papadopoulos is a Principal Researcher with the Information Technologies Institute (ITI), Centre for Research and Technology Hellas (CERTH), Thessaloniki, Greece. He holds an electrical and computer engineering diploma from the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, a Professional Doctorate in Engineering from the Technical University of Eindhoven, a Master’s in Business Administration from the Blekinge Institute of Technology and a PhD in Computer Science from the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki. His research interests lie at the intersection of multimedia understanding, social network analysis, information retrieval, big data management and artificial intelligence. Dr. Papadopoulos has co-authored more than 40 papers in refereed journals, 10 book chapters and 130 papers in international conferences, 3 patents, and has edited two books. He has participated in and coordinates a number of relevant EC FP7, H2020 and Horizon Europe projects in the areas of media convergence, social media and artificial intelligence. He is leading the Media Analysis, Verification and Retrieval Group (MeVer, https://mever.iti.gr), and is a co-founder of the Infalia Private Company, a spin-out of CERTH-ITI.

The Sensors Webinar "Multimodal Sensing Technologies for IoT and AI-Enabled Systems: A Multidisciplinary Approach" was planned and implemented on December 1, 2023, around the Sensors Special Issue on Multimodal Sensing Technologies for IoT and AI-Enabled Systems, covering the topics from a multidisciplinary perspective.

In part 1, Professor George Karagiannidis made the first presentation on Challenges in Real-Time Wireless Cyber-Physical Systems. This timely and exciting talk triggered interesting discussions concerning 5G/6G mobile services, IoT and AI-enabled systems. Dr. Symeon Papadopoulos followed with his presentation on Multimodal Content Analysis in the Service of Journalism, depicting the progress conducted in intelligent systems for innovative media and broader services. This compelling lecture highlighted the multidisciplinary dimension of AI-enabled systems, captivating the audience's attention.

In Part 2, Dr. Emmanouil Tsardoulias, Ph.D. researcher Konstantinos Panagiotou, and Professor Andreas Symeonidis engaged the participants in a hands-on procedure within their workshop No/Low Code Automations for IoT Environments, which kept the interest undiminished, as verified by the number of users actively involved.
