Innovative Schemes for Bio/Chemical Sensors Based on Specialty Optical Fibers, Metasurfaces and Optofluidics
Interesting sensing approaches to realize probes and microfluidic systems for bio/chemical sensing exploiting specialty optical fibers, Metasurfaces, and Optofluidics will be presented in this webinar. For instance, innovative POF-based extrinsic or intrinsic schemes are of great interest to realize bio/chemical sensors for the detection of specific substances in different application fields. Moreover, microfluidic systems can be developed in order to achieve new kinds of small-size and low-cost devices.
Therefore, this webinar emphasizes the development and application of POF-based platforms, Metasurface-based sensors, Optofluidic-based sensor systems, microfluidic systems for sensing, optical biosensors, and optical-chemical sensors.

Dr. Francesco Arcadio
Department of Engineering, University of Campania Luigi Vanvitelli, Via Roma 29, Aversa, Italy;
Francesco Arcadio was born in Italy in 1991. He received a master’s degree in electronic engineering and a Ph.D. in industrial and information engineering from the University of Campania “Luigi Vanvitelli,” Aversa, Italy, in 2018 and 2021, respectively. He is currently a postdoctoral researcher with the University of Campania “Luigi Vanvitelli.” He is also a co-founder of spin-off company MoReSense, Milan, Italy. His current research interests include the design and fabrication of break optical sensors and biosensors.
Prof. Dr. Francesco Dell’Olio
Department of Electrical and Information Engineering, Polytechnic University of Bari, Bari, Italy;
Prof. Francesco Dell’Olio is an associate professor in electronics at the Polytechnic University of Bari, Italy. He has attained the National Scientific Qualification for the position of full professor in electronics and physics of matter.
He was awarded his PhD in information and communication technologies in 2010.
Dell’Olio is a regular member of organizing committees and program committees for international conferences, including CLEO, SPIE Photonics West, and the IEEE Photonics Conference.
He is co-author of two books, published, respectively, by Springer and World Scientific, and 50+ papers in international peer-reviewed journals.
He has been involved in several research projects funded by the Italian Ministry of University and Research, the European Space Agency, the Italian Space Agency, as well as industrial companies, some of which involved taking on roles of scientific responsibility.
His research focuses on silicon photonics and nanophotonics, with a particular interest in the modeling, design, and characterization of devices and integrated circuits for telecommunications and sensing. He has, of late, branched into electrochemical and colorimetric wearable sensors and miniature sensor-based embedded systems.
Dell’Olio recently co-founded a startup company, WEATECHO, which is developing wearable devices for the healthcare market.
Prof. Maide Bucolo
Department of Electrical, Electronics and Computer Engineering (DIEEI), University of Catania, Catania, Italy;
Maide Bucolo received an M.S. degree in computer science engineering in 1997, and a Ph.D in electronic and control engineering in 2001 from the University of Catania. During her Ph.D., she worked as research scholar at the University of California San Diego (UCSD) and after that, often, she has been a visiting researcher at the Microhemodynamics Lab of the Department of Bioengineering at UCSD.
She is currently an associate professor in control systems at the Department of Electrical, Electronic and Informatics of the University of Catania. Her research is focused on methodologies and low-cost technologies for bio-microfluidics system modeling and control. In 2010, she established and became responsible of the 'Bio-Microfluidics Laboratory" (http://www.dees.unict.it/mbucolo/index.php/resources). In 2016, she was visiting professor at the Heriot Watt University. She has been the coordinator of national projects and international exchange programs. She has worked as an expert in the technology innovation department [EE1] of regional small and medium enterprises. She is an IEEE senior member. She has published more than 100 scientific contributions in peer-reviewed international journals and conferences.
