5th Separations Webinar
(Young Scholars Workshop) Metric tools for the evaluation of chromatographic methods

In 1998, Paul Anastas and John Warner were the pioneers who coined the term “Green Chemistry”, as a result of high concern for human health and the protection of the environment from exposure to hazardous chemicals. Since then, many metric tools have been proposed to evaluate the green character of an analytical method. However, soon after, analytical chemists realised that greenness is not the only criterion to be taken into consideration when selecting an analytical method. The consideration of other parameters, such as the type of analysis, the number of compounds that can be determined in one run, the analytical technique and required instrumentation, the throughput, the commercial availability of reagents, the automation degree, the need for pre-concentration to meet legislation criteria, etc., is also essential. Therefore, the practicality and applicability of these approaches are also to be taken into account. Moreover, the analytical performance and innovation grade should, in the meantime, be evaluated using metric tools. The principles and the relevant indices will be described in the webinar, while the software and its application will be demonstrated.

Introduction
Bio
Dr Victoria Samanidou is a Full Professor and Director of the Laboratory of Analytical Chemistry in the School of Chemistry of Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Greece. Since 2022, she has held the position of Vice President of the School of Chemistry. Her research interests focus on the development of sample preparation methods using sorptive extraction prior to chromatographic analysis in accordance with green chemistry demands. Recently, she has been involved in the development of metric tools, with BAGI being the most widely adopted in the scientific community, being used in almost 900 methods.

Adrián is a Postdoctoral Fellow in Analytical Chemistry at the University of Valladolid (Spain). His research focuses on the development and validation of novel analytical methodologies for the determination of target analytes in food and environmental matrices. He has worked extensively with bioactive compounds, alkaloids, plasticizers, and biogenic volatile organic compounds, with a background in the analysis of pesticide residues in bee products using chromatographic techniques (LC and GC-MS). Moreover, he specializes in integrating sustainability into analytical workflows through the design and application of assessment tools and metrics aligned with the principles of White Analytical Chemistry, aiming to promote greener and more practical methods. Throughout his career, he has established himself in the research community, having authored numerous publications, over 50 conference presentations, 2 book chapters, 1 patent, and delivering more than 30 science outreach activities, as well as having teaching experience and working on international collaborations. He is also an active reviewer and serves on the editorial boards of several high-impact journals. His contributions to the field have been recognized with several awards, including the IMFAHE Excellence Scholarship, the EuChemS Young Chemists’ Award, and the National Youth Science Award. He was also selected to join the Nova Talent Network, which brings together the top 3% of young talent.
