Efficient and Ecofriendly Chemical Synthesis of Advanced Materials for Energy and Environment

This webinar “Efficient and Ecofriendly Chemical Synthesis of Advanced Materials for Energy and Environment“ is dedicated to the chemical synthesis of advanced materials for energy and environmental applications, with a special attention toward efficient and ecofriendly preparation methodologies.

Dr. Francesca Deganello (CNR-ISMN, Italy), Dr. Maria Luisa Testa (CNR-ISMN, Italy) and Dr. Sergio Gonzalez-Cortes (University of Oxford, UK) will chair the webinar. The first speaker will be Prof. Luisa de Cola, from Università degli Studi di Milano Statale (Italy). Her presentation will concern porous silica-based Materials. Dr. Aruna, from CSIR-National Aerospace Laboratories (India), will be the second speaker. She will discuss the advantages of solution combustion synthesis for the preparation of solid fuel cells components. Prof. Dr. S. Gross, from University of Padova (Italy), the third speaker, will explore hydrothermal and other low temperature syntheses for inorganic materials.

The presentations will be followed by a Q&A Session and Discussion moderated by the Chairs. The webinar is offered via Zoom and requires registration to attend. The full recording will be found on Sciforum website. Next webinars on Sustainable Chemistry will be announced on the journal website.

Dr. Francesca Deganello

Institute for the Study of Nanostructured Materials (ISMN)—Italian National Research Council (CNR), Italy;Dr. Francesca Deganello is a researcher at CNR-ISMN Palermo (Italy) since 2001. In March 1996 she got the Chemistry degree at the Università degli Studi di Palermo and in February 2002 she obtained her PhD certificate in Chemical Sciences at the same University. She is involved in several national and international projects on the preparation and characterization of sustainable nanomaterials, especially mixed oxides with perovskite-type structure for solid oxide fuel cells operating at intermediate temperatures, for metal-air batteries, and for the degradation of pollutants in the air and in industrial wastewater. In particular, she is responsible for the ISMN unit for the Eurostars project “NanoPerWater: Fabrication of a novel Water filtration membrane based on NanoPerovskite for abatement of CECs“, where she coordinates the synthesis of the catalytic perovskite-type powders. Among the preparation methodologies, she mainly uses solution combustion synthesis with sustainable precursors. Dr. Deganello is the author of 37 peer-reviewed scientific publications, 10 structures in the ICDD database, and about 60 oral, poster communications and invited presentations. Dr. Deganello is a reviewer for materials-related journals and is a topic editor for Sustainable Chemistry (MDPI). She is also involved in outreach activities for schools and the public.

Dr. Maria Luisa Testa

Institute for the Study of Nanostructured Materials (ISMN)—Italian National Research Council (CNR), Italy;Dr. Maria Luisa Testa is a Permanent Research Chemist at CNR-ISMN Palermo (Italy). She completed her undergraduate studies in Palermo (Italy), then she received her European PhD at Valencia University (Spain). Nowadays, her research interests span from environmental heterogeneous catalysis, design and synthesis of hybrid organic-inorganic catalysts and development of supported metal catalysts applied to the transformation of biomass components in biofuels and added-value products. The research is also oriented to the synthesis of hybrid materials for wastewater purification. She had various research international experiences (India –CSIR; France – IRCELYON; Spain- Malaga and Valencia Universities; Ireland – Cork University; Bulgaria - Academy of Science). Part of the activity is also devoted to Chemistry dissemination, teaching, tutoring and thesis supervision. Dr. Testa is author of 45 peer-reviewed scientific publications, patents or book chapters and about 60 oral, poster communications and invited presentations. She is a reviewer for materials-related journals, Topic Editor in “Materials” and Guest Editor of special issues in “Materials” and “Sustainable Chemistry”- MPDI.

Dr. Sergio Gonzalez-Cortes

Inorganic Chemistry Laboratory, University of Oxford, UK;Dr. Sergio Gonzalez-Cortes hold a Licentiate in Chemistry, Cumlaude honour, from University of Los Andes (ULA, Venezuela) in 1993. After several years working as assistant-associate professor at ULA and conducting research independently in C1 valorisation, he moved to the UK where he earned the D. Phil (PhD) in Heterogeneous Catalysis from University of Oxford in 2005. Sergio was awarded a Scholarship from University of Los Andes (ULA, Venezuela) and the National Funds of Science, Technology and Innovation (Venezuela) to complete PhD at Oxford University. He then joined to Oxford Catalysts Company (now Velocys) as Senior Research Scientist to conduct the development of hydroprocessing catalysts for ultraclean diesel fuel and then to Carbon Trust (Future Blends Ltd) in 2012 as Principal Research Scientist to lead research in the synthesis of biofuels. He is currently a Fellow Research at Oxford University focus on the potential applications of microwave energy in a variety of catalytic processes of interest in sustainable chemistry. Sergio was a visiting scholar at University of California at Riverside and at University of Oklahoma (USA). Sergio has published over 70 papers, including two edited books, several reviews, book chapters and patents that are currently in the development and commercialization stages.

On Thursday, 3 June 2021, MDPI and the Journal Sustainable Chemistry organized the 1st Webinar on Sustainable Chemistry, entitled "Efficient and Ecofriendly Chemical Synthesis of Advanced Materials for Energy and Environment". This online seminar was chaired by Dr. Francesca Deganello and Dr. Maria Luisa Testa, who are researchers at the Institute for the Study of Nanostructured Materials (ISMN)—Italian National Research Council (CNR), Italy; and by Dr. Sergio Gonzalez-Cortes, who is currently a researcher at Oxford University. The webinar explored the chemical synthesis of advanced materials for energy and environmental applications.

After a short introduction by the chair Dr. Francesca Deganello, Prof. Dr. Luisa De Cola presented her research on porous silica-based materials. The second speaker was Dr. S. T. Aruna and her presentation showed the advantages of solution combustion synthesis for the preparation of solid fuel cells components. Finally, Prof. Dr. Silvia Gross presented the hydrothermal and other low temperature syntheses for inorganic materials.
