Manifest and Hidden Symmetries in Field and String Theories

The idea of symmetry is the polar star in theoretical physics model. Symmetries may be local or global and may be manifest in a certain range of energy while other symmetries are not evident but instead hidden (approximate or spontaneously broken). Gauge symmetry is the basis of the standard model, and symmetry under diffeomorphisms is a fundamental requirement in general relativity. Based on these cornerstones, any attempt to construct a theory that describes all the fundamental interactions is bound to come across the question of what the most basic (hidden or manifest) symmetry in nature is. Other specific symmetries constitute the backbone of extremely active research fields, such as conformal symmetry or asymptotic symmetries in gravitational problems. This webinar aims to provide a comprehensive view of the most recent research on symmetries, meaning newly discovered or newly proposed symmetries; new aspects of standard symmetries; symmetry breakings; Ward identities and their anomalies; and, finally, the phenomenological applications thereof.
