Advances in Catalytic Asymmetric Synthesis

Asymmetric Synthesis is perhaps the most challenging endeavor in Organic Synthesis as it enables the selective construction of single enantiomers of chiral compounds. The increasing importance and array of applications of chiral small molecules and higher molecular architectures in Material Science and Medicine (>40% of approved drugs are single enantiomers) has been a constant drive for expanding our capabilities in Asymmetric Synthesis. In this context, Asymmetric Catalysis has emerged as a powerful tool in synthesizing chiral compounds in high optical purity and in an economical, efficient, “green” and controlled manner. In addition, the development of new Catalytic Asymmetric methodologies enables the training of young organic chemists into 3D thinking/visualization, consideration of competing diastereoisomeric transition states, understating the origins of asymmetric induction and enantioselectivity and ultimately catalyst design encompassing metal complexes, small organic molecules and macromolecular biocatalysts.
