Welcome to the webinar organized within the Topic “Anthropogenic Impacts in Marine Coastal Waters: Assessment, Case Studies and Solutions”.
Regular assessment of the coastal environments health and careful monitoring of anthropogenic impacts can lead to effective marine conservation. This requires steadfast collaboration and a multidisciplinary approach, starting from scientific research up to the development of conservation measures, proposed and carried out at a regional level also with the involvement of local communities.
In this webinar, several aspects related to these problems will be addressed, and scientific and technical advances and improvements will be discussed.
The following experts will be present and talk. Professor Weiqi Fu will open the webinar sharing his experience on the application of microalgae for ecological and biotechnological studies. He will discuss about key technologies applications and challenges that should be addressed in future research. Professor João Pedro Barreiros, will share his extensive expertise in the conservation status of marine vertebrate species by focusing his presentation on Marine Protected Areas, critically addressing why they are failing to actually protect marine environments endangered by human activities and climate change. Professor Pamela Hallock, expert in reef-associated Foraminifera and their distribution, population dynamics and functional morphology applied in studies of environmental quality, will close the webinar. Her presentation will focus on discussing the possibility that shell production by “invasive” Amphistegina lobifera might locally ameliorate consequences of sea-level rise in warming Mediterranean coastal waters.

Prof. Dr. Weiqi Fu
Department of Marine Science, Ocean College, Zhejiang University, Zhoushan, China;
Prof. Dr. Weiqi Fu is currently a full professor at Zhejiang University while also holding an adjunct professor position at the University of Iceland. He received a Ph.D. in Biochemical Engineering and a Bachelor in Bioengineering from Zhejiang University. He is a Member of the Icelandic Academy of Sciences (a prestigious scientific society established in 1918 in Iceland), a member of the European Federation of Biotechnology, Associate Editor for the journal Frontiers in Marine Science, and Guest Editor for several important journals such as Journal of Marine Science and Engineering, Frontiers in Bioengineering and Biotechnology. He has been invited by European Union Institutions to serve as a European Commission expert to evaluate Horizon 2020 research proposals since 2019. His research interest lies in understanding algal photosynthesis and metabolism and developing bioactive products and anti-fouling materials. He has explored fundamental questions on microbial evolution and metabolism through adaptive laboratory evolution and metabolic engineering and also applied expertise in applied microbiology to perform photobioreactor design, genetic engineering, and process optimization using both model and non-model microalgae (Phaeodactylum tricornutum, Chlamydomonas reinhardtii, Chlorella vulgaris, Dunaliella salina, etc.) towards industrial applications.
Prof. Dr. João Pedro Barreiros
CE3C—Centre for Ecology, Evolution and Environmental Changes, Azorean Biodiversity Group, CHANGE—Global Change and Sustainability Institute, Faculty of Agricultural Sciences and the Environment, University of the Azores, Angra do Heroís-mo, Portugal;
Currently Associate Professor (w/ Habilitation) at the Azores University. Holds a PhD in Biology/Animal Ecology and works mostly with marine predators and other aquatic animals such as crocodilians. Member of the Portuguese Navy Academy and holder of the Commander of the Order of Merit degree by the Portuguese Republic. Member of IUCN’s Groupers and Wrasses Specialist Group. Associate Editor for the journals Frontiers in Conservation Science, International Journal of Zoology and the Scientific World Journal and topic editor for Biodiversity Data Journal. Also dedicating his work to scientific illustration. Most of his current work focuses on marine and other aquatic predators in Macaronesia, Gulf of Guinea, South Brazil and the Pacific coast of Panama.
Prof. Dr. Pamela Hallock (Muller)
College of Marine Science, University of South Florida, St Petersburg, USA;
Prof. Dr. Hallock (Muller) is a senior researcher whose expertise spans multiple areas. Her work includes studying the biological, environmental, and evolutionary controls on the production and accumulation of carbonate sediments. She also investigates the geologic history of reefs and modern coral reef systems. In addition, she specializes in the biology and ecology of subtropical and tropical Foraminifera, as well as shelf ecology and environmental management. Her research further extends to paleoceanography and paleoecology.
