Dr. Marco Masi
Department of Chemical Sciences, University of Naples Federico II, Italy;
Dr. Marco Masi is a researcher (RtdB) of Organic Chemistry at University of Naples Federico II (UNINA). In 2013 he received a PhD in Agrobiology and Agrochemistry at the same University and he performed 6 months of his research activity at New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology, Socorro, NM, USA. Successively, he was awarded a one-year post-doctoral position at Brigham Young University, Provo, UT, USA and one-year at UNINA. Then, he worked for three years as researcher at Biotechnology and Biological Control Agency, BBCA, Rome, Italy. In 2018 he was awarded a post-doctoral position as principal investigator of a project STAR at UNINA. He has acquired over 15 years of experience mainly in organic chemistry, spectroscopy and hemisynthesis of bioactive metabolites (phytotoxins, antibiotics, fungicides, and herbicides) produced by fungi, bacteria and plants. Dr. Masi has established national and international collaboration with Research Centres and Universities and has participated to several scientific international and national research projects admitted at financing based on competitive calls that provide peer review. He has been supervisor of MSc and PhD students in Chemistry and Biology. Dr. Marco Masi is co-author of more than 180 articles published in International Journals indexed in the Scopus and ISI WEB databases; the H-index is 25 and has over 2300 citations on Scopus and /or ISI-WEB of Science. He is co-author of several communications at national and international congresses. He is member of the Italian Chemical Society (SCI).

On Thursday, 9 February 2023, MDPI and the Journal Toxins organized the 5th Webinar of the Toxins series, entitled “Biological Activities and Potential Applications of Phytotoxins”. This online seminar was chaired by Dr. Marco Masi, Department of Chemical Sciences, University of Naples Federico II, Italy, and discussed a variety of phytotoxins, their synthesis, activity, and applications as potential bioherbicides.
The first speaker to kick off the webinar was Dr. Alessio Cimmino, who discussed the use of microbial and plant metabolites for protecting legume crops. Dr. Pierluigi Reveglia followed with his presentation on the phytoxins produced by Botryosphaeriaceae spp. and Phaeoacremonium spp., and their involvement in grapevine trunk diseases. Next, Dr. Jesus Zorrilla addressed the design and synthesis of Strigolactone analogues and their potential use to prevent control of parasitic weeds. Finally, Dr. Roberta Di Lecce presented the secondary metabolites coming from fungi pathogens of forest trees. Speaker presentations were followed by a Q&A session moderated by the chair.
