Dr. Abror Gafurov
German Research Centre for Geosciences, Potsdam, Germany;
Dr. Abror Gafurov is a senior hydrologist with a strong focus on mountain and snow hydrology. His recent research activities are dedicated to the field of cryosphere monitoring, glacier research, and climate impact assessments on water resources in Central Asia. Moreover, Abror Gafurov is an author and developer of the MODSNOW operational cryosphere and water resources monitoring system that is widely used in practice in Central and South Asian countries.
With MODSNOW, Abror Gafurov supported national hydrometeorological services in improving their hydrological forecast skills by using remote sensing-based snow information. Abror Gafurov has also acted as an advisor in high-level decision-making processes related to cryosphere and water resources. Being an author of several scientific publications, Abror Gafurov is also an executive editor of the Central Asian Journal of Water Research and an associated editor of the journal Hydrology.
Dr. Danilo Godone
Research Institute for Geo-Hydrological Protection, Torino, Italy;
Danilo Godone, PhD started his career by studying cryosphere’s phenomena monitoring by innovative geomatics methodologies. He is a senior researcher and head of the local (Torino, IT) branch of the Research Institute for Geo-Hydrological Protection, of the National Research Council. His main research interests are landslides, glaciers and, more generally, natural disasters and their monitoring; including scientific expeditions in several mountain ranges such as: the Alps, Chilean Andes and Patagonia, Nepal, and Pyrenees.
He currently holds the position of Scientific Director and Chairman of the “International Program on Research and Training on Sustainable Management of Mountain Areas” (IPROMO) Summer School in cooperation with FAO Mountain Partnership secretariat, and Torino and Tuscia Universities. He is also a member of NATRISK - Research Centre on Natural Risks in Mountain and Hilly Environments, at Torino University

Glaciers are among the most critical components of the Earth's cryosphere, serving as natural reservoirs of freshwater, regulators of sea levels, and indicators of climate variability. Their role in sustaining ecosystems and human societies is unparalleled, yet they are increasingly threatened by rising global temperatures.
Scientific evidence underscores the alarming rate of glacier retreat, with profound implications for water security, sea-level rise, and the frequency of climate-related hazards such as floods and landslides. The loss of these ice masses not only disrupts hydrological cycles but also poses significant challenges to communities and economies worldwide.

The global change scenario is posing a serious threat to glaciers and, more generally, to the cryosphere. The profound modification induced by these changes is provoking, among others, the increase of geohazards in mountain areas. These phenomena need to be monitored with state-of-the-art methodologies to deal with their impact on the environment and population properly.
