5th Nanomaterials Webinar

Novel Nanomaterials for Applications in Biomedicine and Beyond

I am pleased to welcome you to the webinar on “Novel Nanomaterials for Applications in Biomedicine and Beyond”.

Nanomaterials and nanotechnology continue to revolutionize everyday life by creating materials with unique properties and technologies that were unconceivable until just few decades ago.

This webinar will present three talks by leading established researchers in the field dealing with various aspects of nanotechnology and its application.

The research of Associate Professor Abel Santos from the University of Adelaide is focused on a process known as anodisation, which he uses as a nanofabrication approach to create novel photonic crystal, plasmonic, and hybrid structures with precisely engineered properties to control light–matter interactions at the nanoscale. His research has led to many interesting applications in areas of optical and biosensing, chemosensing systems, and photocatalysis for green energy generation and environmental remediation.

Dr. Vi Khanh Truong from Flinders University will present his research published in leading journals, including Nature Materials and Nature Communications, on development of innovative antibacterial technologies that are inspired by Nature. He has also developed novel liquid metal nanoparticles that have the potential to become a game changing tool to fight antibiotic resistant pathogens.

The third talk will be from myself. I am currently a Matthew Flinders Professor and a Professor of Biomedical Nanotechnology at the College of Medicine and Public Health of Flinders University. In my talk, I will discuss various nanoengineered surfaces developed by means of plasma techniques including antibacterial coatings, cell guidance surfaces, drug delivery vehicles and diagnostic devices. I will also give a glimpse of how we use plasma nanoengineering to solve problems in areas different than medicine such as in environmental science and winemaking.

I believe that you will enjoy the webinar.

Professor Vasilev is currently a Matthew Flinders Professor and a Professor of Biomedical Nanotechnology in the College of Medicine and Public Health at Flinders University. Prior to taking a position at Flinders University in January 2022, Professor Vasilev has built and led at The University of South Australia (UniSA) a highly productive team, currently consisting of more than 20 postdocs and PhD students (size of a Center). His team is well connected having deep collaborative networks within Australia and internationally, and is strongly engaged with industry, end users, government agencies and community. Professor Vasilev has attracted in excess of 25M dollars in research funding from Government competitive grants and Industry, published more than 260 papers and has been awarded several prestigious Research Fellowships from ARC, NHMRC and the Humboldt Foundation, and other awards such as the John A. Brodie Medal for achievements in Chemical Engineering in 2016, and the election of a Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry (FRSC) in 2017. His contribution to UniSA has been recognized by several awards including the UniSA Research Excellence Award in the Mid-Career category (2018), and the Division of ITEE Excellence Award for Leadership in Research (2018), and the UniSA Interdisciplinary Award (2019) for his work across disciplines.

On Thursday 10 March 2022, MDPI and the Journal Nanomaterials organized their 5th webinar entitled “Novel Nanomaterials for Applications in Biomedicine and Beyond”.

The introduction was held by the Chair of the webinar, Prof. Dr. Krasimir Vasilev, a Matthew Flinders Professor and a Professor of Biomedical Nanotechnology in the College of Medicine and Public Health at Flinders University.

The first speaker to kick off this webinar was Prof. Dr. Abel Santos from the School of Chemical Engineering and Advanced Materials, The University of Adelaide, Australia. Professor Santos talked about harnessing light-matter interactions in engineered nanoporous films. Abel’s research has a strong focus on translational science, and he has established research linkages with both universities and industry to expand his expertise across discipline boundaries.

The second presentation with the title "Liquid Metal: Next-generation Antimicrobial Solution" was held by Dr. Vi Khanh Truong from the College of Medicine and Public Health, Flinders University, Australia. He is an emerging young researcher in antimicrobial technology both nationally and internationally. He has developed several revolutionary approaches to protect medical devices and other surfaces from bacterial colorization.

The last presentation entitled "Plasma Nanoengineering for Application in Medicine and Beyond" was held by the Chair himself, Prof. Dr. Krasimir Vasilev. Professor Vasilev has built and led at The University of South Australia (UniSA) a highly productive team, currently consisting of more than 20 postdocs and PhD students (size of a Center). His team is well connected having deep collaborative networks within Australia and internationally, and is strongly engaged with industry, end users, government agencies and community.

The presentations were followed by a Q&A and a discussion, moderated by the Chair. The webinar was offered via Zoom and required registration to attend. The full recording can be found here on Sciforum website.
