Pharmaceuticals Webinar | Can phytomedicine target organ and system functions via multiple pathways?

Dear colleagues,
The main purpose of this webinar is to raise awareness among translational research scientists and clinicians of the unique properties of natural products and their abilities to target multiple pathways. Natural products, including herbal medicines, are complex compounds consisting of multiple bioactive molecules responsible for the unique properties of the product. This advantage of phytomedicines is often overlooked by the modern pharmaceutical industry. However, natural products may be used as an alternative therapy for chronic and mild conditions and as an adjunct therapy for difficult-to-treat diseases.
In this webinar, Dr. Catherine Sherwin will introduce you to phytomedicines with a combination of antimicrobial and immunomodulatory and how these can help to treat microbial, viral, and fungal infections. In the next presentation, Dr. Ram Rao will talk about neuroprotective medicinal herbs and how they can potentially help to treat Alzheimer’s disease. Dr. Kathleen M. Job will present on the frequency of use of supplements and medicinal herbs during pregnancy and the need for additional research in pregnant populations.

Meet Our Speakers
Prof. Dr. Catherine Sherwin
Department of Pediatrics, Wright State University, Boonshoft School of Medicine, Dayton Children's Hospital, Dayton, OH, USA;
Prof. Dr. Catherine Sherwin is a Professor and Vice-Chair for Research in the Department of Pediatrics at the Boonshoft School of Medicine, Wright State University, and Dayton Children’s Hospital, Dayton, Ohio, USA. She is also the Director of the Pediatric Clinical Pharmacology Group at Dayton Children’s Hospital.
She earned her PhD in Pediatrics Clinical Pharmacology at the University of Otago, Dunedin School of Medicine, New Zealand in 2007. Dr. Sherwin completed a one-year Postdoctoral Fellowship at the University of Otago, Department of Women’s and Children’s Health and following that, a two-year Postdoctoral T32 Fellowship training program in the Divisions of Clinical Pharmacology and Pediatric Rheumatology, Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center, Cincinnati, Ohio. Her pre-doctorate background includes a BSc (Hons) in Toxicology, Immunology, and nursing within Cardiothoracic ICU/critical care.
She has over 15 years of experience in clinical pharmacology and toxicology, pharmacometrics, and clinical trials. She received board certification from the American Board of Clinical Pharmacology in 2011. Her previous position was Associate Professor and Division Chief for the Clinical Pharmacology Department of Pediatrics, University of Utah, School of Medicine, Utah. In addition, she was the Director of Pharmacometrics in the Clinical Trials Office at the University of Utah and the Director of the accredited Utah Clinical Pharmacology Fellowship program.
Dr. Rammohan Rao
Apollo Health, Burlingame, CA, USA;
Dr. Rammohan Rao holds a PhD in Neuroscience and was a Research Associate Professor of Neuroscience at the Buck Institute for Research on Aging, Novato, CA. He presently serves as a Chief Scientist at ApolloHealth, which uses a systems-based, integrative approach to prevent or reverse Alzheimer’s disease. Ram has over twenty-five years of research and teaching experience in neuroscience and has published more than seventy peer-reviewed papers in scientific journals, including chapters in several textbooks. Ram is also a NAMA Board Certified Ayurveda Practitioner (AP), a Registered Yoga Teacher (RYT-200), and he teaches Ayurveda and Yoga at the California College of Ayurveda. Ram has published several articles in major Yoga/Ayurveda magazines and has been a featured speaker in several national and international meetings. Ram is also the author of the best-selling book Good Living Practices-The best from Ayurveda, Yoga and Modern Science For Achieving Optimal Health, Happiness and Longevity.
Dr. Kathleen M. Job

Dr. Job is a delegate of the American Board of Clinical Pharmacology whose research aims to advance the understanding of how disease influences drug disposition and action from conception through adulthood.

Phytomedicines can simultaneously target different organs and systems, potentially due to the presence of compounds from various constituents. The best example would be the anti-microbial and immunomodulatory properties of medicinal herbs and mushrooms. Dr. Rao has presented convincing evidence that strongly supports the use of Ayurvedic therapy for the prevention and treatment of Alzheimer's disease. Lastly, Dr. Job raised an important question about what phytomedicines pregnant women take and how we can study their safety. In conclusion, natural products may be used as an alternative therapy for chronic and mild conditions and as an adjunct therapy for difficult-to-treat diseases.
