Advancements in Poultry Vaccine Technologies

In recent years, poultry has become the number one animal protein for human nutrition globally, and the demand continues to grow. However, the production and supply of poultry meat and eggs is influenced by numerous factors, with animal health being at the forefront. Consequently, securing animal health is vital not only to sustain productivity but also as the basis for animal welfare and paves the way for high-quality products.

Vaccination is a key tool to maintain poultry health in the face of numerous infectious agents. Ever since the first vaccines were introduced in farming practices, at the beginning of the last century, poultry vaccines and vaccination technologies have been at the forefront of developments. Today, a number of live vaccines, vector vaccines, subunits, killed and immune complex vaccines, and RNA vaccines are established on the market. The application of vector vaccines in ovo is a success story, combining vaccine development with mass application technology. However, various challenges remain, like the heterogeneity of microorganisms, the lack of vaccines for specific pathogens, and the transfer of single-bird vaccination to mass application, highlighting the need for continuous efforts and further innovations.

Prof. Dr. Ahmed R. Elbestawy

Prof. Dr. Ahmed R. Elbestawy

Department of Bird and Rabbit Diseases, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Menoufia University, Egypt;
Professor Ahmed Elbestawy is an expert in bird and rabbit diseases and currently serves as the Dean of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Menoufia University, Egypt. Professional Memberships: 1. Board Member of the Egyptian Veterinary Poultry Association (EVPA) 2. Member of the American Association of Avian Pathologists (AAAP) 3. Member of the World Veterinary Poultry Association (WVPA) 4. Member of the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) 5. Board Member of Poultry (MDPI Journal) Academic and Research Contributions: Professor Elbestawy has authored more than 100 published research studies focusing on major viral, bacterial, and parasitic poultry diseases, including • Viral diseases: Newcastle Disease, Avian Influenza, Infectious Bursal Disease, Infectious Bronchitis, Adenovirus, and Reovirus • Bacterial diseases: Mycoplasma, Gallibacterium anatis, Ornithobacterium rhinotracheale, Clostridium perfringens, Salmonella, and Escherichia coli • Parasitic diseases: Various significant pathogens affecting poultry He has supervised over 30 master's theses and 10 Ph.D. dissertations. In addition, he serves as a reviewer for more than 60 scientific journals specializing in poultry diseases, virology, and vaccinology.

Prof. Dr. Moaz Rahman Rahman

Prof. Dr. Moaz Rahman Rahman

School of Biological Sciences, University of the Punjab, Lahore, Punjab, Pakistan, Center of Excellence in Molecular Biology, University of the Punjab, Lahore, Pakistan;
Prof. Dr. Moazur Rahman, a Leeds University graduate and Fulbright Fellow, is currently serving as the Director at the National Centre of Excellence in Molecular Biology (CEMB) and as a Professor at the School of Biological Sciences (SBS), University of the Punjab, Lahore. He has more than 25 years of research experience in the field of Biotechnology that he has gained while working in various national and international organizations. His reserch interests include the structural and functional charazterization of membrane and viral proteins for drug discovery and vaccine development. He has won 18 national competitive research grants (worth over 350 million PKR). Prof. Rahman has published >70 research articles in international peer-reviewed journals. He has to his credit one US patent (published in USPTO) and five national patents (with IPO-Pakistan) on vaccine development and disease diagnostics. He has supervised 13 PhD students, 26 MPhil students, and 8 post-doctoral fellows. Currently, 5 PhD students are pursuing their PhD studies under his supervision.
