Dear all, thank you for the participation to the webinar that allow to prompt our Topic “The role of transmembrane mucins in lung diseases” published in MDPI journals list: Cancers, Biology, IJERPH, current oncology and Diseases.
Recently, there has been growing interest in the investigation of the diagnostic and prognostic role of mucins in different lung diseases, including interstitial lung disease, lung cancer and COVID-19.
This has highlighted the role of transmembrane mucins in rheumatologic disorders associated with ILD and the need to identify patients with lung involvement because of the inexorably worsening condition of patients with concomitant interstitial lung involvement. Moreover, since the outbreak of the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2 pandemic, the usefulness of mucins for monitoring disease severity has been suggested.
Today, I’m glad to introduce two colleagues of mine: Prof. Ornella Piazza from University of Salerno, whom major research area is the clinical use of biomarkers in acute respiratory distress syndrome and COVID-19 and Dr Laura Bergantini from University of Siena, whom main research area is the investigation of mucins as diagnostic and prognostic marker for ILD associated and non-associated with rheumatologic disorders.

On Thursday 28 April 2022, MDPI and Topics organized their first webinar entitled “The Role of Transmembrane Mucins in Lung Diseases”.
This Topics webinar fully overviewed the involvement of transmembrane mucins in acute respiratory distress syndrome, COVID-19 and interstitial lung disease patients. Mucins play a crucial role in different lung diseases and are mainly implicated in the process of cellular proliferation, growth, and apoptosis. This has highlighted the role of transmembrane mucins as biomarkers for the diagnosis, prognosis and response to treatment in combination with clinical parameters.
The introduction was held by the Chair of the webinar, Dr. Miriana d’Alessandro from the Department of medical and surgical sciences & neurosciences, from the University of Siena in Italy. Two talks followed: Prof. Dr. Ornella Piazza from the Department of Medicine and Surgery from the University of Salerno in Italy, spoke about the usefulness of Mucins in ARDS and COVID-19 Patients and their potential as disease severity markers. On the other hand, Dr. Laura Bergantini from the Department of medical and surgical sciences & neurosciences, from the University of Siena in Italy, gave a presentation entitled “Mucins as Diagnostic and Prognostic Marker of Interstitial Lung Diseases Patients”.
The presentations were followed by a Q&A and a discussion, moderated by the Chair. The webinar was offered via Zoom and required registration to attend. The full recording can be found here on Sciforum website.
