Advances in Human Machine Interfaces: Robotics and Automation Towards Industry 5.0

Industry 5.0 is an upcoming manufacturing concept which promotes the Human-Machine Interfaces (HMI) in manufacturing and production systems and networks in an attempt to achieve more efficient Human-Robot Collaboration (HRC). Consequently, several new technologies, among them being Cloud Computing, 5G networks, and Artificial Intelligence (AI), Digital Twins (DT), are employed for creating knowledge and to facilitate engineers to design, develop, and implement more robust decision-making frameworks. Automation and robotics are two key areas that provide fertile ground for further research towards the realization of Smart Factories. To that end, automation systems play a very important role in the field of manufacturing, especially under the framework of Industry 4.0, which includes the use of various Information and Communication Technologies (ICT), infrastructure, and control systems such as Smart Machinery, Cyber-Physical Machine Tools (CPMTs), Robotics, Processes in factories, and other applications. Therefore, this Webinar, serves as a communication portal for further investigation of the current trends in modern automation and robotic systems, as well as the discussion of the expected industrial and societal impact to be expected in the next few years.

The blending of human and mechanical capabilities has become a reality in the realm of Industry 4.0. This is an exciting prospect due to the fact that human capabilities are extended in a variety of ways. Enterprises are encouraged towards the design and development of frameworks towards the harnessing of human power and technology in an attempt to enhance the artificial intelligence (AI) era. During the last decade technologies associated with AI have transformed the competitive landscape especially during the pandemic. Concretely, the jobs in the new era now involve integrating people with technology which highlights the importance to focus on the human aspect, described as Society 5.0. Humachine can be realized as a concept that takes advantage of both humans and machines. Therefore, this talk will focus on identifying the capabilities and distinctive characteristics of both humans and machines, in an attempt to lay the foundations for enhancing HMI.

Fellow of the: International Academy for Production Research (CIRP), International Federation of Automatic Control (IFAC 5.2), International Federation of Information Processing (IFIP WG 5.7), European Factories of the Future Association (EFFRA), American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME). Founding Member of the European Aeronautics Science Network/Association (EASN). Authored and Edited “Design and Operation of Production Networks for Mass Personalization in the Era of Cloud Technology”, Elsevier (2022). As an emerging technology, human-robot collaboration (HRC) has attracted increasing attentions in recent years, both in academia and in industry. For example, in human-robot collaborative assembly, robots are often required to dynamically change their pre-planned trajectories and control parameters to collaborate with humans in a shared workspace. However, industrial robots used today in factories are still controlled by pre-generated rigid codes that cannot support effective HRC that requires runtime adaptability. In response to the need of better adaptability, human motion prediction for example is crucial for both collision avoidance and proactive assistance of robots to humans, in addition to multi-modal robot control and in-situ operator support. Deep learning is proven to be useful for classification, recognition and context awareness identification. Within the context, this presentation provides the current status as well as technical treatments of relevant technologies employed in HRC. Remaining challenges and future research directions will also be highlighted.
Bio
Lihui Wang is a Chair Professor in Sustainable Manufacturing at KTH Royal Institute of Technology, Sweden. His research interests are primarily focused on human-robot collaboration, cyber-physical systems, real-time monitoring and control, predictive maintenance, and adaptive manufacturing systems. Professor Wang is actively engaged in various professional activities. He is the Editor-in-Chief of Robotics and Computer-Integrated Manufacturing, International Journal of Manufacturing Research, and Journal of Manufacturing Systems. He has published 10 books and authored in excess of 600 scientific publications. Professor Wang is a Fellow of Canadian Academy of Engineering, CIRP, SME and ASME, the President (2020-2021) of North American Manufacturing Research Institution of SME, and the Chairman (2018-2020) of Swedish Production Academy.

Human-machine interaction (HMI) has been widely researched and reported, with approaches ranging from co-existence to collaboration and human-machine symbiosis. Many research and applications of HMI in human-robot collaboration and human-robot cooperation have been reported. Augmented Reality and Digital Twins have been applied in HMI. This presentation aims to provide an overview of the technical features and characteristics of various HMI approaches. The presentation will summarize the enabling tools for achieving human-machine symbiosis. The current limitation factors and future trends of human-machine symbiosis will also be discussed.
Bio
SK Ong lectures at National University of Singapore, and her research interests are virtual and augmented reality applications in manufacturing, ubiquitous manufacturing, assistive technology and rehabilitation engineering. She is a Fellow of the International Academy for Production Engineering CIRP. She received 2004 Outstanding Young Manufacturing Engineer Award, US Society of Manufacturing Engineers and 2009 Emerging Leaders Award in Academia (US Society for Women Engineers). She has published 8 books and over 300 international refereed journal and conference papers, with a google citation of more than 10,821, and a H-index of 57.
